The Pink Panther

The film that invented Inspector Clouseau, though he's barely the lead — David Niven's suave jewel thief drives the plot while Peter Sellers steals the movie with early flashes of the disaster-prone slapstick that would define an entire franchise. It's a frothy, ski-resort caper wrapped around Mancini's iconic theme: glossy, silly and gorgeously dated. Watch it for the birth of a legend, not a tight plot.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love farce built on a deadpan lead who never once realises he is the joke, with slapstick that trusts its timing and a caper plot that works as a loose frame for the gags.

Skip it if you want a tight, sharp thriller, since the mystery is a thin pretext and the film wanders happily off into long set-piece bits that some viewers will find repetitive.

What it asks of you: Ninety-odd minutes of patience with silliness; it moves at a comfortable amble, rewards attention to background business, and never asks you to take the crime plot seriously.

But It's twistier and a touch more sinister under the polish than you'd expect from something this charming.

Same 'elegant thief plans the perfect job' bones as Panther's Phantom subplot, but played as tragedy rather than farce — the film Clouseau's world is quietly spoofing.

Watch the jewel-thief engine run completely straight — a meticulous, near-wordless heist sequence and a fatalistic ending with none of Panther's fizz but all of its craft.

But It's grim, slow-building and utterly joke-free, so go in expecting dread, not laughs.

But The heist mechanics take priority over gags for long stretches, so it's slower and more procedural than Panther's chaos.

But It's sleek and seductive where Panther is silly; if you're after laughs, this isn't really trying to give you any.

Same era's appetite for widescreen, big-budget slapstick, stretched across a round-the-world car race with pie fights, sabotage and pure cartoon energy from start to finish.

But Baggy and overlong at nearly three hours, with the jokes thinning out well before the actual finish line.

A murder-mystery spoof that gathers thinly-disguised detective parodies — including a Clouseau-adjacent bumbler — into one house for a gloriously silly, quote-heavy whodunit.

But It's broader and more theatrical than Panther's physical comedy — this is verbal spoofery, not pratfalls.

The Party1968

Same director and star reunite for minimal plot and maximum physical comedy — Sellers wrecking a glitzy Hollywood party almost wordlessly, pure pratfall genius from start to finish.

But There's barely any story at all; if you need plot to hang your laughs on, this may feel thin.

Trouble in Paradise1932

The Phantom's suave criminal glamour and comedy-of-manners setting has a direct ancestor here — the same appetite for laughing at, and with, beautiful crooks.

Lubitsch's pre-Code comedy about two elegant con artists worming into high society is dazzlingly witty, and did the 'charming thief among the rich' trick three decades before Panther tried it.

But Black and white, stagey by modern pacing, and its humour is verbal sophistication rather than physical comedy.

Lupin III1971

Structurally it's the same joke as Panther — suave thief versus bumbling law — just transposed into anime, proving the formula travels across mediums.

A gentleman jewel thief bumbles through elaborate heists chased by a dogged, perpetually humiliated inspector — Japanese animation running Panther's exact double-act through a completely different medium and decade.

But Episodic and dated by today's animation standards, with slapstick and action pitched broader and weirder than Western farce.
