Senna

Told entirely through archive footage, radio chatter and home movies — no talking heads, no narration explaining what to feel — this is less a biography than a resurrection. It plays like a thriller even though everyone in the room knows how it ends. You don't need to care about Formula 1; you need to care about obsession, faith and mortality, which Senna had in abundance.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love motor racing as a human drama, the rivalry and nerve of people who chase perfection, told almost entirely through archive footage and the voices of those who were there.

Skip it if you want a neutral, explanatory history of Formula One, since this leans hard toward its hero and rarely steps back to explain the rules or the wider sport.

What it asks of you: Around one hundred and six minutes, built largely from grainy archive footage and interviews, so it moves in long unhurried stretches punctuated by sudden bursts of on-track intensity.

Same director, same all-archive technique turned on another luminous, doomed talent. If you were moved by how Senna's method builds intimacy without a single interview, this is the purest sequel to that idea.

But Its subject and tone are rawer and sadder — less transcendent myth, more slow-motion tragedy up close.

A dramatized rivalry from a decade earlier — Hunt versus Lauda — that hits the same nerve: two brilliant, opposite men risking death for a corner of tarmac. Gorgeously shot, unashamedly emotional.

But It's fiction with actors, so some of the eerie truth of watching the real man is inevitably lost.

Formula 1: Drive to Survive2019

Modern F1's own access documentary, and you'll recognise the DNA immediately — team radio, paddock politics, drivers as gladiators. A binge-friendly way to see how little the sport's psychology has changed.

But It's soapier and more produced; the danger and mythology feel manufactured rather than mortal.

An earlier, fictionalised attempt at the exact thing Senna does for real: making the sport feel mythic and mortal at once, decades before Senna's own career began.

John Frankenheimer's fiction epic, shot with real Formula 1 cars at real circuits, treats racing with the same near-religious seriousness Senna does — speed as a form of communion with death. It's the film Senna's aesthetic is quietly in conversation with.

But Nearly three hours long, dated by today's standards, and its melodrama is pure 1960s studio filmmaking.

The third film in the director's unofficial trilogy of archive-built icons, and arguably the messiest and most human. Genius, self-destruction and adoration, all without a single talking head.

But Maradona's story sprawls into scandal and chaos in ways Senna's tighter, more elegiac arc never does.

Ford v Ferrari2019

Big, glossy, crowd-pleasing racing drama with Christian Bale and Matt Damon, built on the same engine of obsession, engineering and pride. Great sound design if nothing else.

But It's warmer and more triumphant — a Hollywood underdog story where Senna is a tragedy with a religious undertone.

The Last Dance2020

A different sport, a different decade, but the same hagiographic pull — a singular, ferocious competitor mythologised in real time by the people who watched him up close.

But Ten episodes is a much longer commitment, and Jordan gets to narrate his own myth, unlike Senna.

Weekend of a Champion1972

Roman Polanski's intimate, oddly tender documentary following Jackie Stewart around a Monaco Grand Prix weekend — an early ancestor of the fly-on-the-wall access Senna is built from.

But It's slighter and slower, more curio than epic; don't expect the emotional scale of Senna's arc.

Icarus2017

A sports documentary that starts small and turns into something enormous, about the lengths athletes and institutions go to for glory. Different sport, same appetite for risk.

But It's about doping and state conspiracy rather than personal transcendence — a much colder, angrier film.

Redline2009

Strips away the reverence and the real stakes but keeps the soul of the thing: speed and risk experienced as near-spiritual transcendence, just rendered in a completely different medium and register.

A hyperkinetic Japanese animated racing film that takes the same obsession — man, machine, and the willingness to die for a perfect lap — and blows it up into pure sensory overload. Utterly unlike anything else on this list.

But It's loud, cartoonish and gleefully ridiculous; if you wanted Senna's solemnity, this will feel like a different universe.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby2006

Deliberately burlesques the exact mythology of the fearless racing hero that Senna builds with total sincerity — same shape of story, opposite emotional register.

Will Ferrell's dumb, gleeful comedy about a NASCAR driver who believes his own myth is, structurally, the same story Senna tells straight — the fearless champion, the foreign rival, the crisis of identity when he loses.

But It's broad, silly comedy with fart jokes and a cougar in the car; treat it as a palate cleanser, not a companion piece in tone.
