Expedition Impossible

Expedition Impossible is a globe-trotting competition series that drops thirteen teams into Morocco's deserts, mountains, and rivers for a grueling ten-leg race. Hosted by adventurer Dave Salmoni, it's pure physical challenge and human drama—watching smart, capable people tested by exhaustion, heat, and each other. Perfect if you want the spectacle of reality TV without manufactured conflict.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy adventure competitions where the landscape does much of the work and teams of near-strangers have to puzzle their way through unfamiliar terrain.

Skip it if you want gritty survival with real danger and hard stakes; this is a lighter, more upbeat competition that plays its challenges for comfortable fun.

What it asks of you: Ten episodes of an hour each, so it is an easy weekend commitment, with a steady, undemanding pace you can dip in and out of while doing something else.

The Amazing Race2001

The template for everything that came after it. Teams race across countries solving puzzles and completing tasks, with genuine geography, real stakes, and competitors who are actually trying. It's tense without being cruel.

But Eighteen seasons in and the formula is worn smooth. Later seasons lean harder on personality drama than on the race itself.

Survivor2000

The original endurance competition that proves people under extreme conditions make for mesmerizing television. Stripped down, no safety net, no manufactured challenges—just survival. It still holds up.

But The early seasons are wonderful; later ones bloat with twists. And the voting mechanics are a game, not a test of physical capability.

Everest2015

Real expedition footage of climbers attempting Everest, filmed on the mountain itself. The scale is massive, the danger palpable, and it captures the exact psychological breaking point that Expedition Impossible dramatizes.

But It's a documentary about failure and death. If you're watching for inspiration, you'll get tragedy instead.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Senna2010

Both are built on the same engine: ordinary people tested to their absolute limit, watched by cameras, forced to rely on teammates while chasing something bigger than themselves.

A documentary about Formula One driver Ayrton Senna told through archival footage and interviews. It's a competition story like Expedition Impossible—pressure, risk, obsession, teams that either work or don't—but the stakes are fame and death, not prizes.

But You need to care about Formula One, or at least accept a 100-minute meditation on a specific sport. It moves slowly.

Man vs. Wild2006

Bear Grylls drops into impossible terrain and has to survive. It's pure spectacle—the stunts are ridiculous, the locations stunning, and the attitude infectious. Junk food television made with genuine craftsmanship.

But Most of it is staged and edited for maximum drama rather than maximum truth. Once you know that, some of the shine wears off.

Severance2022

A genre-bending thriller about people separated from their work identity. Like Expedition Impossible, it's about teams under pressure discovering who they really are when everything else is stripped away.

But It's cerebral science fiction, not a physical competition. Completely different pace and purpose.

Touching the Void2003

A climber falls into a crevasse alone and has to get out. It's shot with documentary footage and reenactment, brutally tense, and captures the exact moment when determination is all that keeps someone alive.

But It's harrowing and claustrophobic. Some people find it unwatchable.

Touching the Void poster

The Great Race1965

An old-fashioned epic adventure comedy about a cross-continental car race. The stunts are real, the locations glorious, and it has the same spirit of teams pushing against impossible odds for glory.

But It's long, slow by modern standards, and relies on slapstick. Patience required.

Dual Survival2010

Two survival experts dropped into hostile environments and forced to work together. It's shorter and tighter than Man vs. Wild, with more genuine survival skills and less manufactured drama.

But The hosts' personalities are oversized. You're watching them as much as the environment.

The Human Centipede (First Sequence)2009

Both are about the friction between individual survival and group survival. Expedition Impossible explores it through competition; this explores it through surgical horror. Same question asked in radically different registers.

Three people surgically connected into one being must navigate the world as a single organism. It's a twisted, transgressive take on the core of Expedition Impossible—how do groups function when individuals can't act independently?

But It's deliberately disgusting body horror. Many people find it unwatchable and will hate every second. Fair warning.
