It's part physical endurance test, part chess match played with real relationships, and the tribal council vote never stops being brutal. For anyone who loves watching human nature warp under pressure and scarcity.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy watching people reveal themselves under pressure, and you find alliances, betrayals and quiet scheming more absorbing than any big set-piece stunt.
Skip it if you want a tight, self-contained story with a satisfying arc, since this is a reality competition that rolls on season after season with a new cast and no narrative thread to follow.
What it asks of you: Each episode runs about an hour and asks for steady attention across a very long run of seasons, with long stretches of camp life between the tense moments.

Survivor's tribes and shifting alliances are a deliberate echo of this novel's power struggles - producers have named it as direct inspiration for the show's tribal structure.
The original tribal council - British schoolboys stranded on an island form factions, elect a leader, and watch civilization crumble into savagery. It's the bleak ancestor of everything Survivor turns into a game.
But Grim and unrelentingly bleak, with none of Survivor's cheerful competitive spirit; this is about collapse, not gameplay.

It asks the question every Survivor contestant lives with - what happens to a person's authentic self once they know the cameras never stop watching them perform.
A gentle satire about a man who doesn't know his whole life is a TV show - funny, then quietly devastating, and eerily prescient about the reality boom Survivor helped launch two years later.
But A slow-building drama with almost no game or competition; fans of Survivor's adrenaline may find it too contemplative.
Touching the Void2003
Survivor gamifies the question of when to cut an ally loose to save yourself - this documentary shows exactly what that decision costs when it's not a game at all.
A true story of two mountaineers, one impossible choice, and a decision that echoes every alliance betrayal Survivor has ever produced - except here the stakes are a man's life, not a million dollars.
But A genuine account of near-death suffering, tense and often upsetting; there's no game here, only grim reality.
