The Ultimate Fighter

The Ultimate Fighter is the reality competition that made the UFC mainstream. Sixteen fighters live together in a Las Vegas house, train under legend coaches, and fight each week for a six-figure contract. It's sweaty, tense, sometimes petty, and genuinely suspenseful—you care who wins because you've watched them bleed for it.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy reality competitions where the drama comes from people pushing each other to their limits, and you like watching coaches and rivals sharpen a group of strangers into something harder.

Skip it if you want a tight, scripted narrative, since this is a long-running reality format with an episode after episode structure that can feel repetitive if the house dynamics don't grab you.

What it asks of you: Expect a long, steady commitment of many hour-long episodes across many seasons, with slow build-ups between the bouts and little reward for dipping in and out.

Cheer2020

Documentary-style series following elite college cheerleaders through a season. Like TUF, it's about ordinary people pushing past limits under pressure, with real stakes and genuine camaraderie mixed with ruthless competition.

But If you don't care about cheerleading specifically, the sport itself might feel niche. Slower than combat, which changes the texture entirely.

The Traitors2022

Dutch format competition where players vote each other out while trying to complete challenges for a prize. Same house dynamic, same paranoia and alliance-building, but the mind games matter more than physical skill.

But The original Dutch version is superior to most remakes. If you want actual fighting, this is pure social strategy instead.

Gogglebox2013

British series watching ordinary families watch TV together. Sounds gimmicky, but it's genuinely warm and funny—a different lens on the reality-show format that TUF helped establish.

But Very low stakes and very British humor. If you're watching for adrenaline, you won't find it here.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Pumping Iron1977

Both follow obsessive athletes in a house-like pressure environment, building their bodies as their weapon, competing for dominance and a big payday.

Documentary following bodybuilders competing for the Mr. Olympia title, with young Arnold Schwarzenegger. Same structure as TUF—obsessive training, trash talk, the body as battleground, one person winning it all—but translated to a different arena entirely.

But It's slow and meditative at times. If you want constant action, you'll find stretches of just watching people eat and lift.

Love Island2019

Contestants couple up or risk elimination in a villa while audiences vote. Same pressure-cooker house dynamic, same manufactured drama, but the competition is romantic instead of physical.

But It's deliberately trashy and gets repetitive fast. Some viewers find it vapid, and the seasonal format burns people out.

Survivor2000

The grandfather of reality competition TV. Castaways vote each other out while starving and building shelter. Smarter than TUF in some ways—the social game matters as much as the physical.

But Has been running forever and lost momentum. Later seasons recycle twists. Early seasons are better, but that's a time commitment.

The Apprentice2005

Teams compete in business challenges with Trump as final judge. High tension, clear stakes, and the house dynamic works differently each week because the challenges change dramatically.

But Dated fast, and Trump himself is polarizing for many viewers. The show becomes repetitive if you watch too much at once.

Bellator MMA Live2009

Rival MMA promotion with slightly different rules and fighter roster. Scratches the same itch: real fights, real stakes, less hype and production than UFC.

But Smaller promotion with less star power. If you've already watched the UFC's best fighters, Bellator can feel minor-league.

Squid Game2021

Both isolate competitors in a space where alliances fracture under pressure, where the weakest are eliminated each week, where you watch humans under extreme duress decide who stays and who goes.

Hundreds compete in children's games for money, with elimination each round. The house dynamic, the constant threat of elimination, the mix of alliance and betrayal—TUF's emotional stakes transplanted into high-stakes drama with real consequences.

But Violently dark and often bleak. If you watch TUF for the sport itself, this grim tone will feel alien. Some find it exploitative.

The Comeback2005

Both capture reality TV's core truth: people behaving strangely under observation, the performance itself becoming the content, the absurdity of competing for validation on camera.

Mockumentary about a fading actor trying to rebuild his career through a reality show. It's TUF's DNA—manufactured drama, people trying too hard, the gap between their self-image and reality—but as comedy, not competition.

But Lisa Kudrow's character is often unbearable. If you want to root for people, this undercuts that repeatedly. Very cringe.
