Pumping Iron isn't really about muscles — it's about ego, showmanship and the psychological warfare of competition, captured with disarming intimacy months before Schwarzenegger became a movie star. Grainy, funny, oddly tender in places, it plays less like sports doc and more like backstage theatre. You don't need to care about bodybuilding to be hooked; you just need to enjoy watching people perform confidence they don't quite have.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you are curious how obsession, vanity and ambition look when stripped bare and filmed up close, and you can take a sport most people find absurd on its own terms.

Skip it if you want a conventional plot with a clear arc, since this is a loose, observational portrait with long stretches of gym sessions, diet talk and posing.

What it asks of you: Expect a lean 86 minutes that moves between gym floors, backstage talk and interviews, with a patient rhythm and a lot of bare flesh and fierce self-regard to sit with.

But It's broad, silly comedy with zero interest in psychology — pure junk food after a thoughtful meal.
