Musk
Alex Gibney's biographical documentary traces Elon Musk's rise from South Africa to become one of the world's most influential figures. It's a forensic examination of the man behind the myth, balancing archive footage with interviews from those closest to him. For anyone trying to understand how one person accumulated such outsized power over technology, culture, and politics.

The Social Dilemma2020
A sharply constructed documentary about how technology entrepreneurs' decisions reshape society at scale. It asks the same question Gibney does here: who decides what billions of people see and think?
But The interview format can feel stacked and didactic. Some subjects seem to be atoning rather than genuinely unpacking complexity.

WeWork: or The Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn2021
Jed Rothstein's crisp dissection of another visionary entrepreneur who promised transformation but delivered chaos. Fast-paced, darkly funny, and genuinely revealing about startup culture.
But It's more interested in schadenfreude than understanding. The company's collapse makes it easier to land punches.

Pumping Iron1977
Massively influential documentary that made a minor sport compelling by letting the central figure (Arnold Schwarzenegger) drive narrative. Blueprint for personality-centered docs, and endlessly watchable.
But The bodybuilding obsession will feel niche if that world doesn't grip you. Some dated attitudes are present without critical framing.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Citizen Kane1941
Both are portraits of powerful men built from archive, testimony, and myth-making. Both ask: who is the man underneath the legend, and can we ever really know?
The foundational film about how ambition, genius, and publicity fuse to create a figure larger than life. Its structure—piecing together a life from fragments and perspectives—is what Gibney does here, and Welles did it first. Watch it to understand the grammar.
But Black-and-white, mid-century pacing. If you want talking heads and contemporary drama, the elliptical narrative will frustrate.

Fake Famous2021
Piercing look at how influencer culture manufactures authenticity and sells identity. Relevant to understanding how Musk uses Twitter and public myth-making as business tools.
But Some ethical questions about the documentary's own methods. The subjects are deliberately selected for their ordinariness.

The Toys That Made Us2017
Deftly traces how a single product and personality shaped culture and commerce. Shows how mythology, marketing, and genuine innovation intertwine.
But It's celebratory more than critical. The tone is more affectionate tribute than hard investigation.

All the President's Men1976
Both show how power conceals itself and how investigation—whether journalistic or biographical—must dig through layers of myth, PR, and selective narrative to find what actually happened.
A procedural thriller about uncovering hidden truth through investigation and persistence. Captures the actual work of journalism in a way that makes narrative investigation riveting. Tense and beautifully structured.
But It's a 50-year-old political thriller. If you need contemporary relevance to stay engaged, the historical remove might feel abstract.

49 Up2006
Both examine how a single life unfolds over decades, shaped by circumstance and choice. But where Musk is a magnifying glass on one extraordinary figure, Up shows how ordinary lives contain their own complexity and surprise. Together they reframe what biography can show us.
Michael Apted's revolutionary series follows the same people across 60 years, showing how early ambition, class, and luck shape entire lives. It's the opposite of a snapshot—it's how futures actually form. Hypnotic and revelatory.
But Extremely long; the full series is nearly 500 minutes. Requires patience and sustained attention. You're watching lives, not events.
