American Ninja Warrior is unscripted spectacle at its purest: firefighters, teachers, gymnasts, and the occasional ex-athlete hurl themselves at increasingly absurd obstacle courses for the chance to ring a buzzer in Las Vegas. It's loud, earnest, and weirdly moving, built on real physical failure rather than manufactured drama. Great for family viewing, background noise, or full-attention gasping at strangers falling into water.

Executive-produced by the ANW team, it shrinks the format down into giant, booby-trapped mini-golf holes — same obstacle-course DNA, sillier stakes, shorter courses, ridiculous commentary.

But The novelty of golf-themed obstacles wears thin faster than a full ninja course ever does.

Dwayne Johnson built this one himself, and it shows — bigger obstacles, gladiatorial framing, and real emphasis on brute strength for anyone who wants their competitors built like tanks rather than gymnasts.

But Only ran two seasons, and the constant motivational-poster energy from Johnson can feel a bit much.

Free Solo2018

Both are built entirely around a single flawless run through an unforgiving physical course, but Free Solo strips away the buzzer and neon lights and makes the stakes literally mortal — one slip, no soaking pit below.

Alex Honnold climbs El Capitan with no rope, no net, no second attempt — the same 'one mistake and it's over' tension ANW manufactures for entertainment, except here it's real and it never lets up.

But It's quiet, contemplative, and genuinely stressful in a way that has nothing to do with fun family viewing.

Different arena, same hunger to watch ordinary people push their bodies and minds past where they thought they'd stop — plus the strategy and social games ANW never has room for.

But Much slower paced, and the physical challenges are only one part of a longer psychological game.

The lineage show — bodybuilders-turned-gladiators battling civilians through gauntlets and cages, the pure spectacle ancestor of every obstacle competition that came after it.

But Feels dated now, and the gladiator-vs-contender combat format is a different beast from solo course-running.

Cool Runnings1993

The Jamaican bobsled team's story is ANW's emotional engine in feature-film form — ordinary underdogs with no business succeeding at an extreme physical discipline, chasing it anyway, filmed with real warmth instead of arena lighting.

A gorgeously funny, big-hearted underdog sports story about people who have no business competing at the highest level and refuse to let that stop them — basically the ANW ethos with a script and a soundtrack.

But It's a feel-good 90s comedy, not a competition — no live stakes, no real course, just a story you already know the shape of.
