Total Blackout
- Action
- Dip in and out
A half-hour game show where contestants compete in bizarre physical and sensory challenges performed in pitch-black darkness. Hosted by Jaleel White with genuine verve, it's pure spectacle—part fear factor, part slapstick, designed to make you squirm and laugh as people stumble through the dark. For anyone who enjoys watching ordinary people tested in genuinely uncomfortable situations.

Fear Factor2001
The obvious DNA match: contestants face extreme physical and psychological challenges designed to push them past their comfort zones. Same adrenaline, same squeamish appeal, same gleeful schadenfreude.
But It's essentially the same show repeated across two decades—if you've seen one eating-bugs episode, the formula wears thin fast.

Wipeout2008
Like Total Blackout, it's built on physical comedy and genuine peril. Contestants navigate insane obstacle courses while cameras capture every stumble, slip, and humiliation. Same energy, better visual gags.
But Without the darkness element, it loses Total Blackout's unique sensory disorientation. It's funnier but less genuinely unsettling.

Paradise PD2018
Jaleel White also voices a lead character here—and this animated comedy has the same cheerful chaos and willingness to make people uncomfortable. Raunchy, absurd, never boring.
But It's extremely crude and offensive by design. If you want your entertainment family-friendly, this isn't it.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Derren Brown: Mind Control UK2000
Both reveal that our senses are far easier to fool than we think. Total Blackout does it for laughs; Derren Brown does it to make you question reality.
A British magician-mentalist explores psychological illusion and sensory manipulation through real-time performance. Like Total Blackout, it proves how unreliable our senses are, but through elegant psychology rather than slapstick. Genuinely clever and frequently unsettling.
But It's deliberate and cerebral rather than frenetic. If you want chaos and screaming, this methodical approach will feel slow.

Survivor2000
The granddaddy of reality competition TV. Contestants pushed to their limits in harsh conditions, competing for money, creating genuine drama and discomfort. The template every reality show follows.
But Nearly 40+ seasons means the format has calcified. Modern episodes feel calculated and produced compared to Total Blackout's spontaneous chaos.

The Floor2024
A game show where contestants stand in physical isolation competing against others. Like Total Blackout, it focuses on mental endurance and sensory deprivation as game mechanics rather than just aesthetics.
But It's far more cerebral and less visceral—you watch people think rather than squirm, which loses the guilty-pleasure entertainment value.

Don't Forget the Lyrics!2022
Another Jaleel White hosting gig that captures his genuine enthusiasm for putting people in awkward spots. The stakes feel lower, the vibe is warmer, but his charm carries it.
But It's basically karaoke trivia. If you're not interested in music nostalgia, it's just people singing badly.

Is It Cake?2022
A sensory-based competition show where contestants must identify what's cake and what isn't by touching, smelling, and tasting. Focuses entirely on non-visual senses like Total Blackout does.
But The premise is gimmicky and wears out its welcome quickly. After one episode, you've seen all the show has to offer.

Physical: 1002023
A Korean competition show where 100 fit people compete through a series of escalating physical challenges. Intense, well-produced, genuinely surprising outcomes. High stakes without the darkness gimmick.
But It's subtitled, it's lengthy, and it takes itself seriously in ways Total Blackout never does. Very different tone.

Ellen's Game of Games2017
A variety show of party games and quick challenges. Captures the same 'people in uncomfortable situations' energy with celebrity guests instead of unknowns. Light and breezy.
But It's designed to be background viewing—Total Blackout has genuine stakes and tension, this doesn't.
