Goodnight Mommy

A slow, sun-bleached nightmare set in an Austrian farmhouse, where twin nine-year-old boys grow convinced the bandaged woman claiming to be their mother is an impostor. Directors Fiala and Franz strip away exposition, forcing you to read faces and gestures for the truth. It's patient and clinical, building to a finale that reframes everything before it — dread, not jump scares.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like slow-burn unease that lives in silence and stillness, where a sunlit house feels more threatening than any dark corridor and the dread builds from small, deliberate wrongnesses.

Skip it if you need plot momentum or a tidy explanation by the end, since it withholds on purpose and stays hushed and slow for long stretches.

What it asks of you: Patience first: about a hundred minutes of long, quiet takes, with your attention doing much of the work that plot usually would.

The Innocents1961

Both hinge on ambiguous perception filtered through children in an isolated house; The Innocents is the 1961 ancestor of the same unreliable-narrator trick, dressed in Victorian gothic instead of Alpine minimalism.

Deborah Kerr plays a governess convinced her wards are possessed, shot in gorgeous, hallucinatory black-and-white — gothic dread built entirely on whether to trust the children or herself.

But Stagier and more literary, drawn from Henry James, with none of the modern film's clinical violence.

But Much louder and more plot-heavy, with social allegory and jump scares this quieter film never bothers with.

But It's about a breakup and a cult, not a family mystery, and runs much longer at nearly two and a half hours.

Goodnight Mommy runs on the uncanny doubling of identical children and the question of what makes someone 'really' themselves; this true story explores that same nature-versus-nurture unease without a single fictional trick.

A true story almost too strange for fiction: triplets separated at birth who found each other by accident, and the disturbing experiment behind their separation.

But It's a documentary, not horror — the dread builds through interviews and archive footage rather than atmosphere or suspense.

Dead Ringers1988

Where Goodnight Mommy uses twin boys to ask who is really who, Dead Ringers uses twin men to answer it — identity collapsing entirely, the same engine dialed all the way up.

Jeremy Irons plays identical twin gynecologists whose identities dissolve into each other — Cronenberg pushes the twin-uncanny idea into full, grotesque adult body horror.

But Far more explicit and clinical, with a bleaker, more adult register than this film's fairy-tale dread.
