Film
[REC]³ Genesis
- Zombie horror
- Survival adventure
- Very dark
A Spanish found-footage horror film where a wedding reception transforms into a zombie nightmare in eighty brutal minutes. Visceral, claustrophobic, and uncompromising in its mayhem. For genre fans who want their horror sweaty and immediate, with no softening for sentiment.

28 Days Later2002
Infected horror that prioritises speed and terror over gore. A masterclass in tension building that influenced everything that followed, with a genuine emotional core beneath the chaos.
But The infected are less scary if you've seen modern zombie media. Long stretches feel restrained compared to the final act.

Evil Dead2013
Unrelenting practical horror that commits fully to the premise. Gore-drenched and brutal without winking at the camera. A film that understands visceral terror in a confined space.
But The relentless brutality exhausts rather than exhilarates some viewers. Minimal plot means you're watching endurance rather than storytelling.

Martyrs2008
A French extreme horror that respects neither its characters nor its audience. Thematically ambitious in ways that elevate the suffering beyond simple shock value.
But Genuinely difficult to watch. The sustained violence and despair can feel like punishment rather than entertainment.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Xtro1982
Both are Spanish-language horror films that prioritise visceral sensation over plot clarity, using their confined settings to build escalating bodily chaos. Neither film trusts dialogue to do the work.
British sci-fi horror that abandons narrative coherence for pure dread and body-horror invention. Alien parasitism as intimate invasion fantasy. Absolutely committed to its strangeness.
But Structurally incoherent and sometimes nonsensical. The practical effects are often unconvincing, which dilutes rather than enhances the weirdness.

The Raid 22014
Precision choreography of violence in a confined space. Every fight is a small masterpiece of spatial clarity and brutality. Dizzying in its commitment to the craft.
But Minimal plot or character development. If you're watching for story, you'll find yourself waiting between action sequences.

A Dark Song2016
Spiritual horror that builds dread through isolation and obsession rather than jump scares. Two people in a house, undoing each other. Hypnotic and genuinely unsettling.
But Deliberately paced in ways modern audiences find difficult. Long stretches of quiet before the unravelling.

Hostel2006
Backpacker nightmare horror that understands dread before the gore. Subverts travel fantasy into genuine paranoia with craft and discipline.
But Hindsight reveals the plot mechanics are fairly straightforward. Some of the extreme scenes haven't aged as provocatively as intended.

Frontier(s)2007
French New Extremity horror that weaponises terror and allegory. Political horror that doesn't announce its themes, just lets them bleed through.
But Aggressively unpleasant. The combination of violence and ideology can feel designed to alienate rather than engage.

Starship Troopers1997
Insect horror wrapped in satire. The gore and violence serve the film's critique of fascism rather than existing for their own sake. A genuinely smart action-horror hybrid.
But The satire isn't subtle and can overshadow the genuine scares. Some viewers find the tone inconsistent rather than clever.

High Tension2003
Both are post-2000 European horror films that use contained spaces and practical effects to create escalating body-horror. Neither film pulls punches about violence against attractive people at celebrations or in domestic spaces.
French home-invasion horror that weaponises camera movement and editing into pure kinetic terror. A two-hour sustained assault on your nervous system that respects no boundaries.
But The twist recontextualises everything in ways many find cheap rather than clever. The extreme violence toward women can read as exploitative rather than satirical.

Goodnight Mommy2015
Like [REC]³, it's a contemporary European horror film where the familiar becomes monstrous and the home is the trap. Both use the body's transformation as the primary source of dread, and both are willing to hurt their audience as a narrative tool.
Austrian psychological horror that starts as a mystery and becomes a nightmare of familial body-horror. Visually composed like high art, narratively committed to genuine violation. A sick film made with care.
But The twist undermines much of what came before. Violence toward children is central in ways many audiences simply will not accept.
