Same director, same bones - Cukor was retelling his own earlier story when he made the 1954 film, just with songs and three more decades of polish.

This is the film A Star Is Born actually grew out of - George Cukor directing a nearly identical skeleton of rising waitress-turned-star and self-destructing mentor, twenty-two years earlier, at pre-Code speed.

But Creaky early-talkie production values, thinner characters than the classic version, and obviously no music.
