Dodsworth

A dignified American industrialist retires and embarks on a grand European tour with his wife, only to discover they've grown into fundamentally incompatible people. William Wyler's intelligent, unrushed meditation on marriage, ambition, and what we do with freedom when we finally have it. For adults who believe character and restraint can be gripping.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like quiet, grown-up marriage dramas where the sharpest lines come from people who still mean well by each other, and you don't mind a gentle ache running underneath.

Skip it if you want brisk plotting or a clear villain, since this is talky and its heartaches are spread across two people rather than pinned on one.

What it asks of you: Roughly an hour and forty minutes, mostly in hotel lobbies, ship decks and drawing rooms, where you watch faces more than plot.

The Philadelphia Story1940

Explores marriage, infidelity, and class with screwball wit and emotional intelligence. Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and James Stewart navigate a love triangle that's actually about who people really are versus who they pretend to be.

But The comedy can feel dated if you're not tuned to 1940s rhythms. Some will find the class politics and gender dynamics uncomfortable.

Brief Encounter1945

Two married strangers fall quietly in love over tea and conversation. Lean's masterpiece about passion constrained by duty—devastating, beautifully shot, and entirely about what isn't said.

But The pacing is glacial and emotionally internal. If you need plot momentum, this will feel like watching someone remember something sad.

Breakfast at Tiffany's1961

Audrey Hepburn as a woman reinventing herself in New York, pursued by a man who wants her to be someone else entirely. About freedom, commitment, and whether we can change who we are for love.

But The supporting racial caricature is painful. Some will find Holly Golightly's chaos more whimsical than actually authentic.

Something you would not have found on your own.

A Streetcar Named Desire1951

Both diagnose the end of a marriage through accumulated small revelations, but Streetcar locates the problem in passion and class instead of simple incompatibility.

Brando and Vivien Leigh as a couple whose marriage corrodes from within—but from class collision and barely-restrained violence rather than the gentle drifting of Dodsworth. Both are about how incompatibility becomes catastrophe; they just play different octaves.

But It's sexually charged in ways that can feel predatory. The noise and aggression may overwhelm if you came for Dodsworth's quietness.

The Best Years of Our Lives1946

Three servicemen return from war to find their marriages and lives unrecognizable. Wyler again—with him you get the full weight of how we change, and whether the people we love can change with us.

But At three-and-a-half hours it requires commitment. The pacing mirrors real life, which means stretches feel uneventful.

Sunset Boulevard1950

A fading silent-film star and a struggling screenwriter become entangled. Hollywood gothic about delusion, ambition, and the marriage of two people who want completely different things from what the other is offering.

But It's bleak and poisonous. The protagonist is morally compromised in ways the film doesn't let you off the hook for sympathizing with.

All About Eve1950

Bette Davis as an aging Broadway star circled by hungrier younger women. A surgical examination of ambition, rivalry, and the stories we tell ourselves about our own importance.

But Some of the attitudes toward aging and gender feel dated even accounting for 1950. The pacing is talky—this is all dialogue and character.

Tea and Sympathy1956

A sensitive boy at an all-boys school is targeted by peers and staff. A marriage fractures over who he is and who others insist he be. Quietly radical for its time about performance, identity, and belonging.

But The sexual politics, while progressive for 1956, won't feel progressive now. The resolution may strike you as patronizing rather than affirming.

The Remains of the Day1993

Anthony Hopkins as an English butler realizing what he sacrificed to duty and service. A tragedy built entirely from what he never said, never admitted, never permitted himself to want.

But Almost nothing happens. If you need plot, this is slow-motion emotional archaeology that demands patience.

Journey to Italy1954

Both use geography and tourism as the framework for a marriage's quiet unraveling, but Voyage abandons Western narrative polish entirely.

Rossellini's barely-plot film follows a married couple touring Naples while their marriage dissolves around them. Shot like documentary, nearly no score, mostly just two people in a beautiful place slowly understanding they can't stay together. Italy as external mirror of internal distance.

But If you find Dodsworth slow, this will feel like watching paint dry. There's no conventional drama—just mood, light, and the sound of two people not speaking.

Krisha2016

Both use physical space and time—one a European tour, one a reconstructed home—to examine how we survive proximity to people we no longer understand.

Arca's experimental documentary about his family reconstructing their house in rural Ukraine after displacement. Shot in intimate, repetitive fragments that build to something unbearably tender about what holds people together and what comes apart. A completely different register—documentary, contemporary, formally radical—but about the same hard question: What are we to each other when circumstance changes?

But This is avant-garde and demands active watching. No conventional storytelling, no easy answers, minimal dialogue. It's challenging by design.
