A gorgeous, wickedly plotted con set in 1930s Korea under Japanese rule, Park Chan-wook's film folds a swindle inside a seduction inside a rebellion. It rewinds and reveals itself twice over, handing power back and forth between women the plot initially treats as prey. Lush production design, real heat, sharp structural tricks. Best for viewers who love craft as much as twist.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you relish lavish, intricately plotted period stories where layered deception and gorgeous craft matter as much as the plot itself, and you don't mind a sly, sensual tone.

Skip it if you find long, slow-building films draining or get uneasy with frank sexual content, since its near-two-and-a-half-hour run takes its time over every turn.

Both films are studies in a house built to break a woman's mind. Hideko's uncle and Gaslight's husband use isolation, ritual, and 'education' as instruments of control — watching the older film shows where that particular horror was first perfected.

The original word for psychological manipulation, still unnervingly precise — a woman slowly convinced she's losing her mind by the man tightening the walls around her.

But Slow, stagebound, and entirely sexless by comparison — this is control without the erotic charge, just quiet dread.

A slower, quieter queer romance where looking itself becomes the seduction — painterly, patient, and devastating in ways The Handmaiden's baroque style never quite allows.

But Almost no plot mechanics — if you loved the con and the twists, this stillness may feel like an entirely different diet.

Todd Haynes' romance carries the same forbidden charge between two women from different worlds, filmed with the same care for texture, gloves, and stolen glances.

A pop idol's grip on reality dissolves as someone else starts living her life for her — dizzying, disturbing, and hugely influential on the psychological thrillers that followed.

But Animation and a much shorter runtime make it feel like a different beast, and the horror is claustrophobic rather than romantic.

Killing Eve2018

Swap the Korean estate for European capitals and you get the same engine: two women locked in a dangerous, magnetic dance where desire and deception are impossible to separate, power shifting between them scene by scene.

A spy and an assassin become obsessed with each other across stylish, funny, deeply queer cat-and-mouse — genuinely unpredictable and gorgeously performed by its two leads.

But A multi-season commitment with diminishing later seasons, and a tone far campier and more comic than Park's film ever gets.
