Encounter
A South Korean drama about a divorced woman from an elite political family who falls for a younger man of modest means. It's achingly romantic but grounded in real social tension—class, age, and family obligation press against two people trying to choose each other. For anyone who wants their romance complicated, expensive-looking, and genuinely painful.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love slow-burning, melancholy romances where two people who seem mismatched keep colliding, and the emotional stakes feel earned rather than rushed, with a heroine carrying plenty of quiet resentment.
Skip it if you want a brisk romance with light banter, since this one runs long at sixteen episodes of about an hour and lingers on sorrow more than sparkle.
What it asks of you: Plan for roughly seventeen hours spread over several evenings, at a deliberate pace that lets melancholy settle rather than hurrying toward its next beat.

Crash Landing on You2019
A North Korean soldier and a South Korean heiress trapped together; similarly lush production, swooning chemistry, and that particular Korean gift for making class difference both a plot engine and a genuine heartbreak.
But The fish-out-of-water premise leans comedic in ways Encounter doesn't, and the tone can feel scattered across its sixteen episodes.

Something in the Rain2018
An older woman, a younger man, family fury. It has the same nervous electricity about social rules being broken, the same gorgeous cinematography, and a refusal to make the relationship feel shameful even when everyone around them does.
But It stops before fully resolving, which some find brave and others find frustrating. The pacing can drag in the middle.

Descendants of the Sun2016
Song Hye Kyo again, opposite Song Joong Ki, in a sweeping romance about people from different worlds. The production design is gorgeous, the chemistry undeniable, and it has that same sense of two people reaching across an impossible distance.
But The plot leans heavily on action-thriller mechanics that can feel grafted on. If you want pure romance, you'll find distractions.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Handmaiden2016
Both explore how intimacy becomes a form of escape and rebellion against the systems that contain these characters—love as an act of defiance against social order.
Park Chan-wook's jewelled con-artist film starring Kim Tae Ri and Kim Min Hee as a pickpocket and a wealthy heiress whose con becomes a genuine love story. It has Encounter's obsession with class, desire, and the ache of impossible love, but compressed into three explosive hours of intricate plotting and visual rapture.
But It's sexually explicit and contains disturbing content around coercion. The plot is deliberately complicated and requires full attention. It's a puzzle, not a comfort watch.

It's Okay to Not Be Okay2020
A romance that takes emotional damage seriously, with characters who've been broken by their worlds and are learning to let someone in. Visually inventive and genuinely strange in the best way.
But The tone is deliberately weird and off-kilter. If you want straightforward warmth, this will feel cold.

Goblin Slayer2018
A centuries-old goblin and a grim reaper's guide fall in love across time. The production is lavish, the romance is genuinely moving, and it asks serious questions about whether you'd want forever if it meant losing someone you loved.
But Sixteen episodes is a lot, and the fantasy plot gets tangled. Some people bounce off the supernatural setup entirely.

My Mister2018
A worn-down middle-aged man and a young woman in crisis find each other. It's tender, achingly real, and understands loneliness the way Encounter does. No melodrama, just two people learning to matter to each other.
But The pacing is glacial and nothing happens in the traditional sense. You have to be ready to sit with sadness without plot machinery rescuing you.

Thirty But Seventeen2018
A woman wakes from a seventeen-year coma and falls for the man who's been watching over her. It's sincere and funny, with real chemistry and a premise that justifies the age gap without making it weird.
But The amnesia plot device feels dated, and the supporting characters are thinly sketched. The show trades on sweetness more than it earns it.

Tale of the Nine Tailed2020
A nine-tailed fox and a mortal woman; gorgeous production design, lush cinematography, and a romance that builds slowly across time. Feels like the kind of story that matters.
But The mythology can be confusing if you're not familiar with Korean folklore, and the tone lurches between melodrama and action sequences. It's sometimes beautiful and sometimes a mess.

Last Chance U2016
Both understand that the real obstacle to a cross-class romance isn't usually a villain—it's the internal conviction that you don't deserve happiness, and the weight of other people's judgment. The quiet resistance matters more than the plot.
A French miniseries about a woman in late middle age who falls for a much younger man while on holiday. Quieter than Encounter, shot in natural light, with the kind of unhurried pacing that lets you live inside the romance rather than watching it happen. No villain, no sabotage—just two people navigating what they feel.
But Nothing dramatic happens. If you need plot momentum or conflict, you'll find this slow-moving and static. It's more poem than story.

Drive My Car2021
Both resist the idea that romance must be urgent or consummated to matter. Encounter and Drive My Car both understand that some of the deepest connections are the ones we're afraid to name, and that sometimes the most profound moment between two people is simply being allowed to be sad together.
A three-hour Japanese film about a widowed actor who hires a quiet woman as his driver. It's about loneliness, the slow opening of two guarded people toward each other, and the way grief doesn't end—you just learn to sit with someone else's. Visually stunning, narratively patient, morally complex.
But It's deliberately slow and meditative. The romance is restrained to the point of ambiguity. Many people find three hours too long for a story about two people in a car, even if those hours are beautiful.
