Arthdal Chronicles
A lavish Korean fantasy-drama about power, identity, and survival in a mythical ancient city. Visually sumptuous and emotionally intense, it follows four characters whose entangled fates spiral through betrayal and ambition. For viewers who want spectacle with genuine stakes and don't mind moral complexity.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you want sprawling, mythic world-building, a fantasy set in a pre-history of clans and tribes where the politics feel as ancient as the landscape, and you enjoy epic scale even when it wobbles.
Skip it if you want a tight, character-driven romance; this is a sprawling saga where the lovers are one thread among many and the pacing can feel slow across its thirty episodes.
What it asks of you: Settle in for a long haul: thirty episodes of about ninety minutes, a slow build, and a sprawling cast of factions before the story gathers pace.

Game of Thrones2011
Interlocking character arcs, dynastic intrigue, and the constant threat that anyone could fall. Both shows excel at making you feel the weight of political consequence and personal desire colliding.
But If you watched it to the end, you know how it landed. Even if you didn't, the shadow of that finale looms over recommending it.

The Last Kingdom2015
Historical epic about a warrior caught between two worlds and two identities, with excellent production design and genuine emotional stakes. The same DNA of exile, belonging, and the cost of power.
But Slower burn than Arthdal, and the early seasons take time to find their footing. Some viewers find the pacing frustrating until it clicks.

Dune2021
Epic scope, stunning visuals, a protagonist discovering hidden power while caught in forces larger than himself. The same blend of spectacle and intimate character stakes, with a protagonist learning who he really is.
But The film stops mid-story. If you need narrative closure in one sitting, this will frustrate you. Also, some find Villeneuve's pacing meditative rather than gripping.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Handmaiden2016
Both treat their worlds—mythical and period—as sensual, fully-realized spaces where desire and ambition are inseparable, and visual beauty coexists with cruelty.
Park Chan-wook's baroque psychological thriller about identity, deception, and power between three characters whose desires are irreconcilable. Like Arthdal, it's visually opulent, morally complex, and built on the idea that everyone wants something they cannot have without destroying someone else.
But A two-and-a-half-hour film, not a series. Also contains explicit sexual content and operates in register more perverse and noir than Arthdal's epic-fantasy tone. Not for all moods.

Reign2013
Court intrigue, forbidden romance, and moral compromise wrapped in lavish production. Characters betray and scheme while genuine feeling underlies the political chess. Less epic, but the emotional texture is similar.
But Leans harder into soap opera than Arthdal does. If you want every moment to feel consequential, the melodrama can feel thin.

Six Flying Dragons2015
A Korean historical epic about power, legacy, and the cost of ambition. Like Arthdal, it braids together multiple character arcs around the founding of a dynasty, with real stakes and character depth.
But Fifty episodes. The commitment is substantial, and some arcs stretch longer than they need to. Pacing isn't consistent.

Marco Polo2014
A young man discovering his place in a vast, dangerous world while caught between empires. Spectacular production, morally complex characters, and the same sense of destiny and personal transformation.
But Cancelled after two seasons. If closure matters to you, the ending is abrupt and unsatisfying. Also uneven in quality across its run.

The Witcher2019
Monsters, magic, political upheaval, and characters with murky motivations navigating competing desires. It has the same blend of fantasy worldbuilding and character-driven drama, with a similar visual ambition.
But Season one's timeline structure confuses many viewers. Later seasons shift focus in ways some find dilute the core appeal. Also adapting source material that some prefer in book form.

Shadow and Bone2021
A young person discovering hidden power while caught in geopolitical conflict and ruthless characters competing for dominance. Fantasy with character focus, visual flair, and genuine moral compromise from its leads.
But Shorter than Arthdal and less developed. Some characters feel underbaked, and the second season loosens focus. If you want epic scope, it can feel slight.
