Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki makes the same argument as Tender Mercies — that dignity survives ruin through small, deadpan acts of persistence — but strips out every ounce of American sentimentality.

A laid-off couple try to rebuild their lives with such deadpan restraint it becomes strangely moving; if Tender Mercies' quietness appealed, this is quietness distilled further.

But Finnish-language, extremely dry humor, almost no emotional music cues — a real gear change from Mercies' warmth.

Country Strong2010

This is the trashier, more melodramatic version of Mac Sledge's exact story — a country star fresh out of rehab trying to resume touring and love — showing what happens when the same premise gets a Nashville gloss instead of Beresford's restraint.

All the addiction, comeback and love-triangle beats of Tender Mercies, but played for tears and stadium ballads instead of silence.

But Broad and soapy where the original is spare; the songs and speeches do a lot of the emoting for you.
