Of Mice and Men
Other titles called Of Mice and Men: the 1939 film.
- Drama
- Very dark
Steinbeck's novella becomes a taut, unflinching drama about friendship, vulnerability, and the American Dream's cruelty. Gary Sinise and John Malkovich are extraordinary as two migrant workers whose bond anchors everything. It's both deeply moving and quietly devastating—a film that builds toward inevitability with the precision of a trap closing.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you care more about two men's stubborn friendship and the quiet ache of small dreams than about plot, and you like stories where the dialogue carries a lot of weight.
Skip it if you want momentum or a lively cast of incidents, since it moves slowly through long talky stretches and its mood stays heavy with hardship for most of its length.
What it asks of you: Expect a patient evening, just under two hours, with an unhurried rhythm where small gestures and pauses between the characters do much of the talking.

The Grapes of Wrath1940
Ford's masterpiece of Depression hardship and human resilience. Same era, same desperation, same focus on ordinary people ground down by circumstance. Epic in scope but intimate in its heartbreak.
But It's a sprawling, sometimes slow adaptation. The ending is undeniably grim, and there's no catharsis beyond endurance.

Sling Blade1996
A tender, strange portrait of a damaged man released into a world unprepared for him. Like Of Mice and Men, it's about kindness extended toward the marginalised and what happens when that kindness meets the world's indifference.
But The pacing is glacial. Familiarity with Billy Bob Thornton's character type helps, and the violence, when it comes, is sudden and brutal.

Tender Mercies1983
Robert Duvall as a broken man learning to live again through quiet connection and work. It shares Of Mice and Men's belief in dignity through labour and its unhurried examination of two people finding meaning together.
But Nothing much happens. It's a film about stillness and small moments; if you're after plot momentum, you'll find it thin.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Come and See1985
Both are about the powerlessness of the gentle or the innocent when systems larger than human friendship decide to crush them. One is intimate; the other is historical. The ending is equally inexorable.
A Belarusian boy conscripted into the Soviet army during WWII confronts the systematic annihilation of his village. Like Of Mice and Men, it's about innocence and vulnerability colliding with violence designed to extinguish them—but in extremis, apocalyptic form.
But It's one of cinema's most harrowing experiences. Not metaphorically dark; actually, relentlessly, neurologically dark. It will cost you something to watch.

True Grit2010
The Coen Brothers' lean, precise adaptation features a young girl and an aging marshal bound by purpose. Like Steinbeck's novella, it's about protection, loyalty, and the cost of seeing things through to their bitter end.
But It's westernised and less emotionally exposed than Of Mice and Men. The violence is stylised rather than psychologically real.

The Straight Story1999
David Lynch's only G-rated film: a man rides a lawnmower across Iowa to reconcile with his brother. Achingly tender, about ordinary lives and the small acts of persistence that constitute redemption.
But It moves at walking speed. This is a film about nothing happening, watched with perfect attention. Not everyone wants that.

Mud2013
Two boys drawn into the life of a drifter hiding in the bayou. Like Of Mice and Men, it's about the mythology we construct around damaged men and the price of loyalty.
But The pacing is deliberate, and the ending disappointed some viewers who expected a different kind of resolution. Southern Gothic can feel mannered.

Winter Light1963
Bergman's chamber piece about a pastor and the human beings who enter his church. Spare, aching, and focused on the gap between what we promise others and what we can actually deliver.
But It's austere and intellectual. Religious doubt doesn't interest everyone, and the film offers no warmth or resolution.

Paris, Texas1984
Harry Dean Stanton as a man emerging from isolation, learning to reconnect. Wim Wenders' masterpiece about the damage silence does and whether love can bridge it once it's been allowed to calcify.
But It's slow and meditative to the point of dread. The emotional climax is withering rather than cathartic.

Killer of Sheep1978
Charles Burnett's lyrical, fragmentary film about a man killing livestock in an LA slaughterhouse. Quietly observant about invisible labour and the interior life of someone society has marked as disposable.
But It's experimental and non-narrative. Shot in stunning black-and-white, it's visually ravishing but emotionally distant by design. You have to meet it halfway.

Killer Joe2012
Both understand that loneliness and need make people vulnerable to exploitation, and that the systems meant to help—or just to exist around us—are indifferent to that vulnerability. But where Of Mice and Men is tragic, this is vicious.
Tracy Letts' transgressive Texas noir. Matthew McConaughey as a corrupt cop who enters a fractured family with lethal intent. Savage, funny, and shot through with the same mordant understanding that desperation makes people dangerous to each other.
But It's viciously dark comedy that doesn't soften its subject. Extremely graphic sex and violence. The bleakness is the point, which will feel like provocation to some.
