The Marx Brothers invented this register of gleeful, structureless idiocy; watching it is like seeing Dumb and Dumber's ancestor operate at full anarchic speed.

But It's black-and-white and stagey, and the jokes come from wordplay and vaudeville timing rather than physical gross-out.

The granddaddy of committed-idiot comedy — everyone plays absurdity completely straight, which is the exact trick Carrey and Daniels are running here.

But It's spoof-format, gag-a-minute rather than character comedy, so the rhythm is looser and more scattershot.

Ben Stiller's male model is another towering monument to confident stupidity, dropped into a genre parody with the same anything-goes silliness.

But The fashion-world satire has aged oddly and some jokes lean hard on very-2001 cultural references.

Will Ferrell's newsroom idiot is cut from the same cloth — supremely confident, catastrophically unaware — with the same improv-heavy, quotable energy.

But It's more ensemble sketch than tight buddy story, so the plot wanders even further than this one's does.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly play two grown men with the emotional maturity of children — buddy idiocy dialed up to a nearly feral degree.

But It's louder and more aggressively juvenile, without much of the sweetness that softens Lloyd and Harry.

Two devoted, none-too-bright best friends chase a dream with the same infectious, puppyish enthusiasm that makes Lloyd and Harry so likable.

But It's gentler and more sketch-based, without the road-trip structure or the gross-out escalation.

It plays the exact same friendship dynamic as tragedy instead of comedy, and the shift makes you see Lloyd and Harry's bond in a completely different light.

But It's a genuinely sad, slow drama about disability and loneliness — nothing here is built to make you laugh.

The Trip2010

Same setup — two mismatched friends driving through scenery, one oblivious to how insufferable he's being — but performed as dry, semi-improvised banter instead of American slapstick.

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon play exaggerated versions of themselves bickering across a restaurant tour, and the low-key one-upmanship is its own quiet kind of hilarious.

But There's no plot and no gross-out gags — the humor is dry, verbal and very British, a world away from this film's chaos.
