A pair of amiably clueless California metalheads borrow a phone-booth time machine from the future to kidnap historical figures for a school report, and chaos, in the gentlest possible sense, ensues. It's dumb in the most loving way — sweet-natured, quotable, utterly unbothered by logic, and powered entirely by Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter's genuine, goofy chemistry. A comfort watch for anyone who thinks history class should have had more Napoleon at the mall.

Same dim, big-hearted metalhead energy, same total commitment to being uncool and loving it. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey have the exact easy double-act chemistry that makes Bill & Ted sing.

But More SNL sketch-logic than plot, and its references are firmly stuck in 1992.

Back to the Future1985

The time-travel adventure that Bill & Ted is gleefully riffing on — tighter plotting, higher stakes, but the same joy in messing with history for a good cause.

But It's a genuinely well-built thriller-comedy, so if you want pure goofiness you'll find this comparatively serious.

Galaxy Quest1999

Lovable idiots stumble into an actual sci-fi adventure and rise to the occasion out of sheer decency — the same underdog-heart-of-gold engine, aimed at Star Trek instead of history class.

But Needs some affection for cheesy '90s sci-fi and convention culture to land fully.

Time Bandits1981

Same core gag — ordinary nobody vs. history's biggest names, played for comic anachronism — but a full decade earlier and with real menace lurking under the fairy-tale silliness.

Terry Gilliam's original ragtag time-travel-through-history romp, years before Bill & Ted, with a boy bouncing between eras and historical figures via magical portals instead of a phone booth.

But Much stranger and darker underneath the whimsy — Gilliam's imagination runs to genuinely unsettling places.

Groundhog Day1993

Another high-concept time gimmick used to sneak in something surprisingly sweet about becoming a better person, told with the same easy comic warmth.

But Slower and more introspective — there's no phone booth, no Napoleon, just one man and his own head.

The Princess Bride1987

A totally different setting but the same gleeful, self-aware silliness stacked on top of real affection for its characters and a killer sense of pace.

But Fantasy-adventure rather than sci-fi comedy, so the dudes-on-a-quest tone is there but the vibe is more storybook than stoner.

Ghostbusters1984

Deadpan losers with ridiculous tech save the day almost by accident — the same low-stakes-feeling-but-actually-apocalyptic comedy that makes Bill & Ted work.

But Sharper, more sarcastic humor than Bill & Ted's puppyish sincerity — different comic temperature entirely.

If you love Bill and Ted mainly for being lovable idiots, this doubles down — pure, committed, big-hearted stupidity from two guys who never stop trying.

But Cruder and grosser, with none of the sci-fi wonder — just idiocy for its own sake.

It's the history-report bit taken to its logical, unhinged extreme — same love of mangling the past for laughs, but as documentary-format TV instead of studio comedy.

A TV series built on the exact premise Bill & Ted's school report needed: actual history, delivered by narrators who are, as advertised, extremely drunk, reenacted by comedians with total earnestness.

But Format is short sketches rather than a story, and the humor is raunchier, more adult, more chaotic than anything in Bill & Ted.

Shaun of the Dead2004

Same engine — slacker-duo bromance stumbling into world-saving heroism through loyalty and dumb luck — reskinned as horror instead of sci-fi, with a much sharper, meaner sense of humor.

Two aimless best mates, one dim and lovable, accidentally end up saving the world — just with a zombie outbreak instead of a history final, and considerably more blood.

But Genuinely gory horror-comedy with a much darker, more cynical British wit than Bill & Ted's Californian sunshine.
