Ghostbusters is a monster movie that got infiltrated by comedians and came out better for it. Three disgraced parapsychologists start a pest-control business for the paranormal, and the film plays the horror completely straight — genuine dread, gooey practical effects, a city under real threat — while letting Bill Murray undercut every bit of it with deadpan asides. It's a hangout comedy wearing a blockbuster's clothes, built for anyone who wants scares and jokes in equal, unforced measure.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like comedy that plays its wildest premise completely straight, with deadpan bickering between a few mismatched friends who treat the apocalypse like a dull workday.

Skip it if you want fast, constant gags, since much of the charm is in long, easygoing stretches of banter and a slow build before the chaos arrives.

What it asks of you: About ninety minutes of unhurried, cheerful silliness, with a light touch and an easy pace that rewards relaxed attention rather than close focus.

Ghostbusters lifted its whole structural joke — regular guys reacting to movie monsters with fear and wisecracks instead of heroism — straight from this lineage of monster-comedy team-ups.

This is the blueprint — ordinary, terrified schlubs colliding with monsters everyone in the audience already recognizes, playing fear for laughs decades before Murray ever picked up a proton pack.

But Black-and-white, vaudeville-paced comedy; the jokes are broader and the effects are, charitably, of their era.

A Japanese haunted-house film so gleefully unhinged — a killer piano, a demonic cat, blood-spewing paintings — it makes Ghostbusters look positively restrained; pure, anarchic visual invention.

But Subtitled, plotless by Western standards, and so tonally bizarre it can feel like a fever dream rather than a story.

Strip away every gag and gadget and you're left with the image Ghostbusters plays for laughs — a spirit unable to leave, watching the living move on — taken completely, quietly seriously.

A nearly wordless film about a man who dies, becomes a sheet-draped ghost, and watches his life and house continue without him — slow, devastating, and unlike anything else on this list.

But There's barely a plot or any dialogue; it asks for patience, not popcorn, and offers zero jokes.
