Ghostbusters II

The gang's back, business is bust, and New York's turned mean enough to power a river of psychic slime. Ghostbusters II trades scrappy invention for glossier spectacle — more slapstick, more kids in the audience, a villain painting come to life. It's comfort food rather than a revelation: familiar chemistry, lower stakes, higher budget, best enjoyed without comparing it too hard to the original.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you still have a soft spot for the loose, bickering chemistry of a sequel that trusts its cast to riff, and you don't mind a looser plot if the jokes keep landing.

Skip it if you came for the sharp, self-contained sci-fi comedy of the original, since this one leans on repetition and a slightly sillier, more sentimental tone than its predecessor.

What it asks of you: It runs about an hour and forty-eight minutes and moves at a comfortable, chatty pace, asking you to sit back and enjoy the banter rather than follow dense plotting.

Tim Burton's afterlife bureaucracy comedy shares GBII's DNA of pen-pushers, paperwork and monsters as inconvenience, but turns the dial toward gothic mischief and Michael Keaton at his most unhinged.

But Burton's visual chaos and manic energy can feel exhausting if you prefer a gentler comic rhythm.

Same secret-agency-fighting-weird-things structure, same New York setting, same odd-couple charm — just swap ghosts for aliens and slime for neuralyzers. Smith and Jones have Venkman-and-Stantz chemistry to spare.

But Its slicker '90s sci-fi sheen is a different flavour of fun than GBII's shaggy practical-effects charm.

Ghostbusters made a franchise out of the idea that ghosts are mostly a nuisance to be managed rather than feared — Topper got there first, fifty years earlier, as pure screwball comedy.

Long before proton packs, this screwball classic invented the 'ghosts as exasperating houseguests' joke — a glamorous dead couple haunts a stuffy banker into loosening up. Genuinely charming, genuinely funny.

But Black-and-white 1930s pacing and manners-comedy rhythms will feel slow next to modern effects comedy.

Gremlins1984

Another Christmas-adjacent creature comedy where small-town chaos escalates into puppet-driven mayhem — gleefully dark, genuinely funny, and unmistakably of the same 80s effects-heavy comic-horror moment.

But It's meaner and more genuinely scary for younger viewers than GBII ever gets, despite the cute marketing.

Big Trouble in Little China1986

John Carpenter's supernatural action-comedy has the same wisecracking-heroes-versus-ancient-evil energy, with Kurt Russell gloriously out of his depth in every scene. Pure practical-effects, quotable-line joy.

But The plot is deliberately, cheerfully incoherent — a bug for some, a feature for others entirely.

If GBII's ghoulish family-friendly comedy appealed, this is the next logical step: gothic, silly, stacked with quotable performances, and just as happy being a haunted-house sitcom in movie form.

But It's gentler still, with barely any horror-comedy tension left — pure whimsy and almost no scares at all.

Casper1995

A friendlier, kid-pitched ghost comedy that leans hard into the sentimental side GBII only flirts with — good for a nostalgic double-bill with younger viewers or your inner ten-year-old.

But It's considerably softer and sappier, with none of the Ghostbusters' irreverence, sarcasm, or adult jokes.

The gender-flipped reboot keeps the same proton-pack silliness and Manhattan-under-siege stakes, with a genuinely funny new cast finding their own rhythm rather than just imitating the originals.

But Its divisive reception means you'll go in carrying baggage either way, whether that's fair or not.

The Frighteners1996

Peter Jackson's pre-Rings ghost comedy is stranger and gorier than GBII, with Michael J. Fox as a con-man medium — a weirder, darker cousin worth seeking out.

But It swings harder into horror territory than GBII fans might expect, with real scares among the jokes.

What We Do in the Shadows2019

Swap ectoplasm for bloodsucking and a movie for a sitcom, and you've got the same joke GBII runs on: monsters are funniest when they're stuck doing paperwork and getting nagged by their bosses.

A mockumentary about vampire roommates fumbling through bureaucracy, rivalries and mundane chores — same comic engine as the Ghostbusters' cluttered firehouse, updated for prestige-TV mockumentary style.

But It's a long-running sitcom commitment, not a single evening's watch, and the format takes an episode or two to click.

GBII's slime literally feeds on bad feelings; this film takes the same idea — that hauntings are made of unresolved emotion — and plays it dead straight instead of for laughs.

A near-silent arthouse film about a sheeted ghost haunting a house across centuries — meditative, strange, quietly devastating. About as far from Slimer as a ghost movie gets.

But It's slow, wordless and mournful by design — the opposite of a crowd-pleaser, deliberately so.
