Blithe Spirit
Other titles called Blithe Spirit: the 1945 film.
A dizzy spiritualist summons the ghost of a writer's first wife, trapping him between two women—one dead, one very much alive and furious. It's a frothy, fizzy farce that relies on charm and chaos rather than logic, best watched when you're in the mood for laughs over sense.

Ghostbusters II1989
A supernatural rom-com ancestor that balances genuine romance with broad comedy. Bill Murray is charming, the ghost effects are inventive, and it knows exactly how silly it is—just like Blithe Spirit.
But The tone can feel dated, and the plot meanders through New York's infrastructure in ways that test patience. Some of the humour lands differently now.

Beetlejuice1988
Michael Keaton as a manic ghost broker is pure energy. It's got the same DNA—dead spouse complications, slapstick, the supernatural as an inconvenience—but with Gothic style and genuine weirdness underneath.
But It's darker and weirder than Blithe Spirit. If you want lightness and romance, this tips too far into Tim Burton's ghoulish playground.

Singin' in the Rain1952
The ur-text of effervescent comedy romance. Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor prove that a love triangle can be hilarious rather than tragic, set to music that makes everything shimmer.
But It's a musical from 1952. If you're allergic to dancing or orchestral accompaniment, this will feel like a museum piece rather than entertainment.

Something you would not have found on your own.
The Skin Game1931
Both are Noël Coward plays adapted to screen, both turn domestic marriage chaos into slapstick, and both understand that a good ghost story is really just about who has to share a bathroom.
Hitchcock's earlier stage-play adaptation that proved you can make supernatural household chaos both visually sophisticated and genuinely funny. The spirit mechanics are pure setup for character collision, just like Blithe Spirit.
But It's silent-film era technical quality—grainy, sometimes hard to follow, built on assumptions about pacing and performance that feel museum-like now. Patience required.

Here Comes the Sun2023
Another ghost-returns-to-complicate-things story, but fresher and more tender. It's got the supernatural mechanics but treats its characters with unexpected warmth and finds real stakes under the whimsy.
But It's quieter and more melancholy than Blithe Spirit, which might feel like a comedown if you're craving pure froth and slapstick.

The Whole Nine Yards2000
Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry navigate a chaotic domestic situation with ex-wives and secrets. It's got similar energy—smart people in increasingly absurd scenarios, held together by charm and sexual tension.
But It's darker and occasionally crude. The comedy is meaner. If you love Blithe Spirit's lightness, this could feel cynical by comparison.

Midnight in Paris2011
Owen Wilson's writer gets pulled into magical complications that expose his marriage's fault lines. It's about wanting what you can't have, set in a dreamy register with wit that doesn't rely on shouting.
But It's Woody Allen, which means it's self-absorbed and occasionally precious. It also assumes you know your literary history to catch the references.

Enchanted April1991
A British ensemble retreat becomes a space where marriages unravel and reform. Graceful, witty, and interested in actual human feeling beneath the fantasy of transformation and escape.
But It's languid and introspective. If you came for Leslie Mann's physical comedy, this will feel slow and literary.

What If2013
A what-if romance that explores the same question Blithe Spirit does: what happens when desire and circumstance collide? It's lighter than it sounds, with genuine chemistry and laugh-out-loud moments.
But It's a Netflix rom-com, which means predictable and occasionally saccharine. The writing can feel like it's working too hard.

Arcane: League of Legends2021
Both understand that the real conflict isn't romantic but structural—how do you live with the people you love when the world around you won't let you? Both find comedy in the absurdity of the trap itself.
A Netflix animated series about two sisters separated by circumstance, each trapped in their own world, gradually learning that the person they thought was the villain is actually a victim. It's got the same magical geometry as Blithe Spirit—three people, each partially right, each partially wrong, caught in a system bigger than themselves.
But It's animated and visually anarchic. It's also extremely sad in places, with real stakes and body horror. If you want lightness, this will feel like watching someone's heartbreak in 3D.

The Go-Between1971
Both are about the moment when a marriage stops working, and both understand that the appearance of a third party—or the ghost of one—just illuminates what was already broken. Same diagnosis, completely different tone.
A 1970s British film about a boy caught between two lovers, watching the elaborate lie-system they've built. It's gorgeously composed melancholy about romance as a system that crushes everyone involved. Utterly unlike Blithe Spirit's fizz, but searching the same question: what do we owe to people we've stopped loving?
But It's slow, formal, and sad. It's shot through with a sense of inevitability and loss. If you want fun, you've come to the wrong place.
