Just Like Heaven
- Urban fantasy
- Romance
- Light-hearted
A romantic comedy ghost story where a workaholic doctor insists she's alive while the guy in her old apartment is equally sure she's dead. It's a charming, lightweight fantasy that trades in genuine warmth and chemistry over big laughs. Perfect if you want something that feels like a hug from 2005.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy romantic comedies that lean on a supernatural premise and let the chemistry between two leads carry the gags, with a light, sweet touch rather than anything grand or cynical.
Skip it if you want a sharp, fast-moving plot; this one is gentle and leisurely, and the fantasy hook gets stretched across scenes that mostly circle the same comic situation.
What it asks of you: Ninety-five minutes, unhurried, with a warm and easygoing tone; you give it a willing, relaxed attention and it rewards you with pleasant fun more than surprises.

While You Were Sleeping1995
Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman have the same effortless romantic warmth. It's a gentle fantasy-adjacent romance about mistaken identity and second chances, built entirely on likability and genuine heart.
But The central deception plot hinges on a lie that takes forever to resolve. If you need your leads to have full honesty early, this will frustrate you.

Ghostbusters1984
The original template for romantic chemistry between the skeptical and the supernatural. Bill Murray's deadpan romance with the unknowable has the same DNA as Ruffalo's bewilderment here.
But It's primarily a comedy and action film. If you're after pure romance, the spectral stuff takes priority and the love story is tertiary.

Splash1984
Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah navigate the impossible logistics of loving something that shouldn't exist. It has that same '80s rom-com earnestness about making the inexplicable work between two people.
But The magical premise is played quite straight and wistfully. It's not cynical, which some find saccharine rather than sweet.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Braindead1992
Both are about a man adapting to an impossible domestic situation with someone he loves. One is a lightweight fantasy romance; this is horror-comedy about enabling and entrapment. Same emotional shape, completely different genre.
Peter Jackson's grotesque zombie comedy where a man tries to hide his mother's transformation from everyone around him. The central relationship—warped caregiving and denial—mirrors the codependency of Just Like Heaven from a completely deranged angle.
But It's obscenely gory and grotesque. The humor is pitch-black and the violence is not stylized. You will see things that cannot be unseen.

Legally Blonde2001
Reese Witherspoon at her most charming, proving she can carry a film on warmth and intelligence. The tone—bright, unironic, fundamentally kind—matches Just Like Heaven's entire worldview.
But It's aggressively cheerful and asks very little of you intellectually. Some viewers find that exhausting rather than refreshing.

Always1989
Spielberg's underrated romantic fantasy where a dead pilot watches over his living girlfriend. It has the same bittersweet logic: how do you love someone when the rules say you shouldn't exist?
But It's maudlin and overwrought. The earnestness can tip into melodrama if you're not in the mood for it.

The Adjustment Bureau2011
Matt Damon and Emily Blunt navigate a world where their relationship breaks cosmic rules. It's a grown-up version of the same question: what if being together violates the laws of reality?
But It takes itself much more seriously than Just Like Heaven. The philosophical weight might feel like overkill if you just want charming.

I Could Never Be Your Woman2007
Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd in a romantic comedy about impossible circumstances and genuine affection. It has that same underrated quality and earnest sweetness that doesn't try too hard.
But It's genuinely obscure for a reason. The execution doesn't quite match the charm of its premise, and the pacing drags.

Serendipity2001
John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale in a fantasy romance built on fate and second chances. It shares Just Like Heaven's willingness to be unironic about destiny and grand romantic gestures.
But The whimsy is relentless and the plot is essentially a pretext for romantic setpieces. If you need story momentum, you'll feel cheated.

A Ghost Story2017
A haunting meditation on a ghost bound to the place it loved and the living person who moves in. It explores the core premise of Just Like Heaven with philosophical depth and genuine sorrow.
But It's slow, quiet, and deeply sad. There's no romance here, only grief. It's an inversion that some will find devastating instead of comforting.

Night and Day1946
Both are about a man dealing with a woman who seems to exist on the wrong side of reality, whom he cannot touch but cannot ignore. One is a screwball fantasy; this is a glamorous, sophisticated meditation on impossible desire. The emotional core is identical; the decade and tone could not be more different.
Cary Grant and Alexis Smith in a Cole Porter musical about a man haunted by a woman he cannot have. It's prewar romance at its most sophisticated—elegant, witty, about longing more than resolution.
But It's a studio musical from 1946, which means it's slow, the plot is gossamer-thin, and you need to actively enjoy golden-age Hollywood to get through it.
