Midnight Madness

A 1980 Disney comedy about five teams of misfits competing in an all-night treasure hunt across Los Angeles. It's got the earnest charm and goofy ensemble energy of early-eighties family filmmaking, the kind where everyone's allowed to be weird. Perfect if you love scrappy underdogs and don't mind a little cheese with your laughs.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love nostalgic, good-natured capers where the fun is in the clever scavenger-hunt puzzles and a ragtag cast of teams trying to outwit each other across one long night.

Skip it if you want a tight, modern pace; this 1980 Disney-era comedy is loose, goofy and charmingly dated, with broad slapstick that will feel silly rather than sharp.

What it asks of you: Settle in for a little over an hour and a half of episodic wandering, with a relaxed rhythm that rewards patience and a willingness to enjoy silliness for its own sake.

Willy's Wonderland2021

Five teams of unlikely heroes face off in a high-stakes competition that rewards cleverness and teamwork. Like Midnight Madness, it finds comedy in the absurd and never loses faith in its ensemble cast.

But It's much darker and stranger—Nicolas Cage fighting possessed arcade machines isn't quite the family-friendly romp you're signing up for here.

Troop Beverly Hills1989

Another ensemble comedy built on the energy of ragtag teams learning to work together. Same DNA: colorful characters, a central competition, and genuine warmth underneath the silliness.

But It's aimed squarely at kids and has aged in ways that make some of the humour feel a bit thin on rewatching.

National Lampoon's Vacation1983

Ensemble road-trip comedy where lovable goofballs navigate disasters with good intentions. The same affectionate, anarchic spirit—you root for these people even when everything falls apart.

But It's grittier and more irreverent. If you want the Disney version of chaos, Midnight Madness is cozier.

Ratatouille2007

Both are about outsider teams competing through ingenuity rather than athletic prowess. The real victory is learning to trust each other.

A competition-driven story about two unlikely teammates learning to work together through mutual need and discovered respect. Like Midnight Madness, it finds genuine heart in the ensemble dynamic and trusts that different personalities make things better, not worse.

But It's an animated film and far glossier than 1980s live-action comedy. The tone is warmer and more sentimental. You're looking for human goofballs, not rats and restaurants.

Ghostbusters1984

Four mismatched personalities forming a team through shared crisis and competition. The ensemble energy is electric, and like Midnight Madness, it trusts that funny people are more interesting than attractive ones.

But It's a supernatural action film first and comedy second. You're after something lighter and more purely playful.

Better Off Dead...1985

A chaotic comedy built on oddball characters and escalating weird scenarios. It has the same willingness to let visual gags and character absurdity do the heavy lifting.

But It's darker—a teen suicide comedy that lands differently than family-friendly material, and can feel scattered.

Real Genius1985

Genius students outsmarting the establishment through cleverness and teamwork, with genuine affection for its ensemble. That same 1980s warmth and faith in misfits working together.

But It's much more a teen comedy than family material. The tone is sharper and more knowing.

Police Academy1984

Five misfit recruits bonding through competition and adversity. Ensemble comedy where the joy comes from watching people surprise each other and themselves.

But It's scrappier and more vulgar. The jokes are broader and sometimes cruder than what you'll find in Midnight Madness.

Porky's1981

Ensemble cast of lovable goofballs united by a common goal. Same period, same cheerful chaos, same warmth toward its characters despite constant mayhem.

But It's explicitly sexual comedy aimed at older teens. A very different register from the family-friendly treasure hunt you're remembering.

Johnny Dangerously1984

Comic chaos with a large ensemble cast and genuine affection for its ridiculous characters. Same energy: everyone's allowed to be weird, the film loves them for it.

But It's more aggressively absurdist and wears its comedy very broadly. If you want something more grounded, this swings too hard.

The Great Race1965

Both films are built on ensemble teamwork and competition structured as a treasure hunt across real geography. Both treat their weirdos with genuine love rather than contempt.

A lavish, globe-spanning competition film built on slapstick, ensemble warmth, and genuine affection for its oddball characters. Director Blake Edwards understood that comedy comes from caring about people, even ridiculous ones.

But At two hours fifty minutes, it's long even by 1965 standards. The pacing is deliberate and theatrical rather than snappy. The jokes are silent-film influenced, not 1980s brash.

Severance2022

Both use competition and ensemble teamwork as their engine, and both understand that solving puzzles together creates bonds. But where Midnight Madness finds joy in the chaos, Severance finds horror in it.

A workplace competition where five mismatched people must work together to solve a mystery under pressure. It has Midnight Madness's DNA—ensemble chemistry, puzzle-solving, colorful oddballs forced into alliance—but rewired as tense psychological drama.

But It's genuinely unsettling and morally dark. There's no warmth or comfort here. If you want the fun of the treasure hunt without existential dread, this is the opposite direction.
