A shaggy, funny, quietly devastating buddy movie disguised as a wine tour. Paul Giamatti's failed novelist and Thomas Haden Church's fading actor bicker their way through Santa Barbara vineyards, each avoiding the wreckage of his own life. It's droll rather than broad, more interested in disappointment than romance, and ends up saying more about male friendship and self-sabotage than most films twice its length.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you savor talky, wry character studies where the humour comes from awkward silences, half-confessed regrets and long drives through wine country, and you don't need much plot to stay hooked.

Skip it if you want brisk momentum or big emotional payoffs, since this is a leisurely, dialogue-heavy film that lingers on sour moods and wine-tasting chatter for most of its 127 minutes.

What it asks of you: Unhurried and conversational, with long scenes where comedy arrives quietly and melancholy settles in slowly; it rewards patience more than close plot-tracking.

The gentlest show ever made about male friendship and quiet disappointment — two metal-detecting obsessives in rural England, funny in the same hushed, observational way Sideways is funny, but even kinder.

But Almost nothing happens; if you need plot momentum, this show will frustrate you.

But Almost no dialogue or event; it demands patience and won't reward anyone looking for laughs.
