Old Joy

A hushed, elliptical drama about two old friends who take a weekend camping trip into the Cascades and discover how much distance life has put between them. Actor-musician Will Oldham gives it his shambling, unpredictable charisma; Kelly Reichardt shoots the Pacific Northwest like a held breath. Nothing much happens, and everything does — for patient viewers who like ambiguity and mood over plot.

But It's even sparser than Old Joy, and considerably sadder — there's no warmth of male companionship to soften the ache.

Reichardt again, this time three overlapping stories of Montana women whose lives brush past loneliness and connection. Kristen Stewart, Michelle Williams and Lily Gladstone are all extraordinary in the stillness.

But Three threads instead of one relationship means less intimacy — some viewers find the anthology structure diffuses the emotional pull.

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon drive around northern England eating well and needling each other, and somewhere under the impressions and one-upmanship is a real ache about aging and friendship.

But It's a comedy first — if you wanted Old Joy's hush, the constant banter and bits might feel like the opposite instinct.

Both films strip a friendship down to a single meeting and let the gap between two men's lives do all the work; Old Joy just swaps a Manhattan restaurant for an Oregon hot spring.

Two old friends, one dinner, ninety minutes of pure talk about the lives they've chosen and the ones they didn't — the purest possible ancestor of Old Joy's premise, decades before mumblecore existed.

But It's almost entirely dialogue with zero visual incident — even more of an endurance test for anyone who wanted a story.

Another two-hander road trip where old friends confront who they've become, wine-soaked and funnier than Old Joy but circling the same questions about drift and disappointment.

But Alexander Payne's film is talkier and more plotted — less interested in silence, more in dialogue and set pieces.

A father and son on a low-stakes road trip through flat, beautiful Midwestern nowhere, shot in gorgeous black and white, finding grace in things left unsaid.

But It's about family rather than friendship, and its humor is broader and more overtly comic than Old Joy's melancholy.

Meek's Cutoff2011

Reichardt once more, this time pioneers lost on the Oregon Trail — same patience with landscape and silence, same refusal to resolve things neatly, just in a different century.

But It's a western, glacially paced even by Reichardt's standards, and offers almost none of Old Joy's warmth or humor.

A tender, gently funny film about a man reckoning with his father's late-life coming out, and with what he owes the people he loves. Same soft, observant tone.

But More plot and a real emotional arc than Old Joy allows itself — if you wanted pure mood, this resolves more than you might expect.

Grief handled with the same refusal to explain or sentimentalize, plus a New England chill that matches Old Joy's damp Oregon woods. Casey Affleck is remarkable.

But It's a much heavier, more devastating film — Old Joy's sadness is a low hum, this one is a gut punch.

A quiet indie about family and the awkward distance between people who love each other but no longer know how to talk, with the same patient, watchful camera.

But It trades Old Joy's two men in the woods for a whole extended family in North Carolina — a busier, more populated film.

Still Walking2008

Same trust in silence and ordinary detail to carry emotional weight nobody says out loud — Kore-eda and Reichardt are working the same muscle in different languages.

A Japanese family gathers for one day to mark an old death, and in Kore-eda's hands the smallest gestures — cooking, eating, an offhand remark — carry decades of unspoken resentment and love.

But It's in Japanese with subtitles, concerns a family rather than friends, and its sadness is more accumulated than Old Joy's single weekend.

Same fear at the center — that adulthood, marriage and fatherhood quietly erase the friendships that made you who you are — just played for laughs instead of aching silence.

Paul Rudd's friendless groom-to-be goes on a series of disastrous 'man-dates' to find a best man, and underneath the broad comedy is the exact same anxiety Old Joy sits with: what happens to male friendship once life fills up.

But It's a studio comedy with jokes and a plot resolution — the polar opposite of Old Joy's ambiguity and quiet.
