Same subject, opposite temperament: both use a child pageant as a lens on family desperation and small-town dreams, but this one is vicious satire where Little Miss Sunshine is an embrace.

A mockumentary about a small-town Minnesota beauty pageant where contestants start dying under suspicious circumstances. Gleefully cruel, quotable, and much funnier than its premise has any right to be.

But It has zero interest in tenderness — if you want the Hoovers' warmth, this will feel mean-spirited instead.

Two mismatched men on a road trip through California wine country, one self-destructing quietly, one loudly. Alexander Payne's gift for humiliating his characters while still loving them.

Both watch a family's private failures get exposed by an external performance under pressure — a pageant here, an avalanche there — but this one refuses the redemptive group hug.

A Swedish family's ski holiday cracks open after the father's instinctive, cowardly reaction to danger, and the rest of the trip becomes a slow-motion reckoning with what that revealed. Excruciating, brilliant, a masterclass in tension from mundane humiliation.

But It's cold where Little Miss Sunshine is warm, subtitled, and offers almost no comic relief from the discomfort.
