Woody Allen basically invented the move Rob pulls constantly — breaking the fourth wall to explain, in real time, exactly how a relationship went wrong while still missing the point of it.

But Allen's persona and off-screen history have curdled the film for a lot of viewers, fairly or not, and it shows its age in places.

(500) Days of Summer2009

Same trick, different decade: a narrator convinced he's the wronged party, replaying a relationship out of order to prove a point the film quietly disagrees with.

But Its whimsy — the animated sequence, the on-screen day counter — can feel try-hard if you're not in the mood for cute.

Same premise underneath the pyrotechnics: a self-absorbed man ranking and relitigating a partner's romantic history instead of examining his own — High Fidelity's structure turned into an action-comedy with health bars.

It takes Rob's 'top five breakups' bit and makes it literal — an arrested-development guy has to defeat his girlfriend's exes one by one, staged as actual video-game boss fights.

But The hyperactive visual style and video-game logic will exhaust anyone who wanted the quieter, more grounded version of this story.

Grosse Pointe Blank1997

Cusack again, playing another man who left his old life and girlfriend behind and has to reckon with it — this time as a hitman going to his high school reunion.

But The comedy is broader and the stakes are literally life-and-death, so the emotional register is less grounded.

Kevin Smith's talkiest, most sincere film — a comic-book-store guy who has to unlearn exactly the kind of possessive, list-making jealousy Rob specializes in.

But Very of-its-decade in dialogue and attitudes about sexuality; some of it plays awkwardly now.

Another self-pitying, culturally snobbish man narrating his way through failure — wine instead of vinyl, road trip instead of record shop, same wounded ego underneath.

But It's slighter and sweeter — no real romantic reckoning, just a very good day at a very good job.

Jack Black, unleashed rather than sidekicked, turning the exact same music-snob energy Barry brings to the shop into a full lead performance you can't look away from.

But It's a family comedy at heart, with none of the romantic mess or melancholy — pure joy, different mission.

But It's considerably softer and more optimistic; the edges Rob has are sanded down here.

The Apartment1960

The same balancing act High Fidelity attempts — comedy that keeps threatening to tip into real sadness — was Wilder's whole career, and this is the purest example of him pulling it off.

Billy Wilder's bittersweet comedy about a lonely man lending out his flat for other people's affairs while nursing his own hopeless crush — the tone Rob is chasing, done first and better.

But Black and white, 1960s pacing, and a much gentler brand of wit — no needle drops, no snark, just perfect construction.
