Walking and Talking

A sharply observed comedy about female friendship and the discomfort of growing up. Catherine Keener and Anne Heche navigate anxiety, romance, and the gap between who you are and who you thought you'd be by your thirties. Intimate, funny, sometimes awkward—exactly like the friendships it chronicles.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like small, talky comedies where the laughs come from awkward silences and the ache of a friendship shifting under its feet, and you're happy with very little plot.

Skip it if you need plot to carry you, since this one is mostly talk and wandering, and its anxious, self-absorbed heroine can wear thin.

What it asks of you: Its running time is short, around 86 minutes, but the scenes linger in long, looping conversations, and the tone stays wry even when it turns melancholy.

Diner1982

Ensemble comedy about men in their twenties circling around work, women, and commitment. Warm, naturalistic dialogue that lets you live in these characters' heads. A clear template for what Walking and Talking does for women.

But The gender politics are very much of 1982. Some of it lands differently now.

Tiny Furniture2010

Lena Dunham's debut: a woman in her twenties adrift after college, living at home, tangled up in bad relationships and good friendships. Same DNA—unglamorous, achingly honest, laugh-out-loud without trying.

But Dunham's narration style is not for everyone. The character is deliberately difficult to like.

Mistress America2015

Noah Baumbach's tribute to the pleasure of female friendship and the comedy that lives in the gaps between what people say and what they mean. Rapid-fire, observant, warm underneath.

But The pacing is deliberate and indie. If you need plot momentum, this won't provide it.

The 40 Year-Old Virgin2005

Both are about the specific loneliness of being left behind by your peers, told with genuine affection for people who are not perfect.

Same emotional engine as Walking and Talking: a person genuinely stuck, genuinely kind, watching their friends move forward while they stand still. Judd Apatow's warmth for his characters is identical to Nicole Holofcener's. Funny without being mean.

But It's broad comedy with physical gags. Tonally nothing like the indie reserve of Walking and Talking, which might feel jarring.

High Fidelity2000

A character narrates their own romantic failures in real time, cycling through relationships and trying to figure out who they are. Funny, tender, honest about what a mess being an adult actually is.

But The male perspective might feel like a different lens if you're drawn specifically to Walking and Talking's female angle.

Before Sunrise1995

Two people talk for nine hours. No grand plot; just conversation about life, love, meaning. Linklater's gift is making that sound fascinating. Released the same year as Walking and Talking and speaks the same language.

But Some find the dialogue arch. It demands patience and genuine interest in how people think.

Broadcast News1987

James L. Brooks on ambition, friendship, and romantic confusion among smart people who know their flaws. Witty ensemble piece that trusts the audience to keep up with three competing perspectives.

But The newsroom setting dates it. Some of the romantic elements feel schematic now.

Girls2012

Ten seasons of Lena Dunham and her circle navigating sex, work, friendship, and identity in New York. Comedic and brutal. Walking and Talking is the spiritual ancestor; this is what happened to those characters ten years later.

But The show's ethos—self-absorbed, repetitive, sometimes punishing—is not what everyone wants from television.

Rebecca1940

A woman spirals into anxiety and obsession after her wedding. Smart, dark, and unsparing about how easily self-doubt can metastasize. Phoebe Waller-Bridge's take on female neurosis with real stakes.

But It's mean-spirited in places. The tone lurches between comedy and something much harder.

Personal Velocity2002

Three women, three stories, rapid montage editing. Rebecca Miller captures how people construct narratives about their own lives and how wrong those stories often are. Fractured and restless in an interesting way.

But The stylistic flourishes can feel fussy. Some viewers find the jumping between stories annoying.

Courage Under Fire1996

Both films trust female relationships as the central drama without explanation or apology. Both were made in 1996 by women trying to show something true.

Deepa Mehta's film about two women whose friendship becomes love, made in the same year as Walking and Talking. It shares the intimate, observational tone and the refusal to moralize about how people actually live. Quiet and devastating.

But It's a serious film about a serious subject. There's almost no comedy. The cultural context will be unfamiliar to many viewers.

Made for Each Other1939

Holofcener is writing in a tradition of comedies about the mundane disasters of partnership. Stewart and Lombard do the same work—making quotidian anxiety the subject, treating it as worthy of an entire film.

James Stewart and Carole Lombard as a young couple navigating work, money, and the gap between who they are and who they thought they'd be. Romantic comedy from when that phrase meant something actually comic—small moments, real friction, the comedy of adjacency.

But It's a 1939 film shot in black and white. If you need contemporary aesthetics, this will feel impossibly distant.
