Spike Spiegel's fatalistic cool, his trench-coat silhouette and his doomed-gunman posture are lifted almost directly from this film's antihero; it's the DNA Bebop borrowed and set adrift in space.

A silent, immaculate hitman drifts through Paris in a trench coat, and Bebop's creators have openly cited this exact cool as the template for Spike's whole existence.

But Glacially slow by modern standards, almost no dialogue, and zero space battles — pure minimalist mood.

Black Lagoon2006

Trades melancholy for pure mercenary swagger — gunfights, boats, and morally murky antiheroes with the same cool-headed style Bebop trades in.

But Much nastier and more violent, with none of Bebop's tenderness or emotional undertow.

Baccano!2007

A non-linear crime caper stuffed with immortals, gangsters and trains, told with the same jazzy confidence and structural cleverness as Bebop's best episodes.

But The fractured timeline and huge cast can be genuinely disorienting on a first watch.

Outlaw Star1998

A contemporary of Bebop with the same ramshackle spaceship crew, bounty-of-the-week plotting and scrappy charm — comfort food from the same era.

But Rougher animation and shallower characters; it's the little brother, not the equal.

Also Watanabe, also episodic, also gorgeous — but played almost entirely for absurdist comedy rather than melancholy, a fun contrast to Bebop's ache.

But Deliberately disposable and silly; if you want Bebop's emotional gut-punches, this mostly won't deliver them.

Mainstream proof the misfit-crew-killer-soundtrack-space-outlaws formula works anywhere — big, funny, and genuinely moving in places.

But Glossy blockbuster polish and quips-per-minute pacing are a world away from Bebop's cool restraint.

If it's the style you love — impeccable action choreography, a hero defined by loss, a world with its own strange code — this delivers the live-action version.

But All action, no space opera, and considerably less interested in melancholy than in stunt work.

Chico & Rita2010

Yoko Kanno's score treats jazz as a language of longing; this film makes that idea explicit, animating the music itself as the emotional core rather than the backdrop.

A hand-painted, gorgeously animated romance between a pianist and a singer in 1940s Havana and New York, carried entirely by the same love of jazz that scores every frame of Bebop.

But No action, no genre trappings — this is a slow, aching love story told through music, which is a very different evening.

Deadwood2004

Both shows use a genre's outer trappings — space bounty hunters, frontier gunslingers — to ask the same question about what drifting, violent people owe each other.

Swap spaceships for a lawless mining camp and you get the same rotating cast of outlaws building an accidental family while wrestling with what a code means once the law stops mattering.

But Dense, profane, almost Shakespearean dialogue and a slow-burn ensemble structure that asks for real patience before it pays off.
