Machines that think, or almost think, keep arriving at the same uncomfortable doorstep: a made thing asks to be treated as someone. These stories sit with that question longer than most sci-fi does, and they tend to leave you wondering which of the people around you you'd have recognised as real. Westworld and Her both live in that ache, though the mood ranges from dread to tenderness.
