If Neon Demon left you wanting the beauty-industry horror pushed past subtext into full, grotesque literalism, this delivers — vanity turned into visceral, unforgettable body horror.

But It's extremely graphic and gross-out by the end; the satire is broader and less restrained than Refn's cool detachment.

But Subtitled, slow by today's pacing, and its shocks land more through implication than the graphic image Refn goes for.

Refn's own breakthrough, the same neon palette and near-wordless tension, proof this director's style isn't a one-off experiment.

But It's a genre romance-thriller at heart — warmer and more conventionally plotted than Neon Demon's cold nightmare.

But It's bleak nonfiction with no catharsis or style to soften it — nothing like Refn's stylized escape valve.

Death Becomes Her1992

Same premise — women destroying each other and themselves in pursuit of eternal youth and beauty — played as broad, gleeful black comedy instead of Refn's cold dread. The appetite is identical, only the register has changed.

Wildly fun, genuinely inventive practical effects, and a much-needed release valve if Neon Demon's humorlessness wore you down.

But It's a totally different register — slapstick where Neon Demon is stone-faced, so the connection is thematic, not tonal.
