A British pilot cheats death and ends up literally on trial in the afterlife for the right to keep living, argued before a celestial court in gorgeous Technicolor-versus-monochrome imagery.

But Wartime-era pacing and theatrical dialogue; it's a mid-century courtroom fantasy, not a joke machine.

Also fundamentally about the hard, unglamorous work of becoming kinder. Sweet without being saccharine, funny without needing anyone to be terrible.

But Slower burn, no supernatural scaffolding, and its earnestness occasionally tips into sentimentality.

Watch awful people become decent ones in real time, one absurd small-town humiliation at a time. The character growth is the whole point, exactly like Eleanor's.

Angels drift silently through Berlin, watching humans and longing to feel what they feel. Wenders' black-and-white/color device makes the ache of ordinary life almost unbearable.

But Slow, subtitled, and nearly plotless by design — it's contemplative arthouse cinema, the polar opposite of a punchline every ten seconds.

The Truman Show1998

Swap Michael's neighborhood for a soundstage and you get the same structural engine — a fabricated environment engineered to observe and shape a person's soul — played as unsettling drama, not comfort comedy.

A man's entire world turns out to be a constructed set run by an unseen, ostensibly benevolent architect testing his behavior without his knowledge — sound familiar?

But No jokes-per-minute rhythm and a much darker undercurrent about surveillance and manipulation.
