The First Temptation of Christ
- Comedy
- Strange
A Brazilian comedy special that imagines Jesus returning home for his 30th birthday with an unexpected plus-one. Audacious, absurdist, and deliberately sacrilegious, it's a 46-minute sprint through irreverent humour with theatrical flair. For viewers who enjoy provocative comedy that swings wildly between crude and clever, and aren't easily scandalized.

Life of Brian1979
A comedy that weaponizes religious satire with surgical precision, mixing slapstick with genuine theological argument. The tonal blueprint for irreverent faith-based comedy.
But Forty-five years old and the Python formula—non-sequiturs piled on non-sequiturs—can feel more arch than funny if you're not already converted to their sensibility.

Godless2017
A Netflix miniseries about a town run entirely by women in the Old West, with Jeff Daniels as a charismatic preacher. Funny, visually inventive, and gleefully undermining religious authority structures.
But Each episode runs 50+ minutes; the pacing meanders in places, and it asks for real commitment before the irreverence pays off.

The Righteous Gemstones2019
Danny McBride's HBO series about a televangelist dynasty imploding spectacularly. Vicious satire of prosperity gospel wrapped in absurdist family dysfunction and genuine emotional stakes.
But It's a serial drama first and a comedy second. If you want punchlines every thirty seconds, you'll find stretches that drag.

Something you would not have found on your own.
The Last Temptation of Christ1988
Both center on an alternative Jesus narrative. One finds it in comedy, one in spiritual anguish. They're inverse approaches to the same transgressive impulse.
Scorsese's banned-in-multiple-countries provocation imagines Christ's final moments as doubt and temptation. Serious where Porta dos Fundos is silly, but equally willing to ask impossible questions about faith.
But Nearly three hours, deliberately ponderous, and theologically dense rather than entertaining. Some will find it pretentious rather than daring.

Fleabag2016
Phoebe Waller-Bridge's six-episode confessional about a woman sabotaging herself, featuring a priest character of surprising depth. Irreverent about sex, religion, and family without ever feeling cruel.
But The fourth-wall breaks and tonal shifts won't land if rapid cutting and self-aware narration aren't your thing.

Dogma1999
Kevin Smith's absurdist theology-comedy about two fallen angels trying to exploit a loophole in Catholic doctrine. Genuinely weird, stuffed with actual religious philosophy, and committed to the bit.
But It's a 130-minute movie that drags in the second act, and Smith's dialogue can feel self-indulgent even when it's working.

Primal Fear1996
Not a comedy, but a legal thriller where religious authority and manipulation get methodically deconstructed. Edward Norton is astonishing; the twist reframes faith as weaponry.
But It's a straight dramatic film, not an irreverent romp. Some may want lighter fare after Porta dos Fundos.

Spotlight2015
Boston Globe journalists methodically exposing Catholic Church abuse. Serious, precise filmmaking about institutional corruption and the power of investigative accountability.
But Grim subject matter. There's no comedy here—it's journalistic thoroughness as moral force, which some find exhausting.

The Good Place2016
A philosophical comedy where ethics and religion collide constantly, often hilariously. Kristen Bell navigates questions of morality and belonging with both humour and genuine warmth.
But Seasons two and three lose focus; the earlier episodes are sharper. Not as anarchic as Porta dos Fundos—it's gentler by design.

Sacred Games2018
A Hindi-language Netflix series where crime, mythology, and spirituality collide in modern Mumbai. Visually arresting and morally complex, using religious iconography in unexpected ways.
But It's a sprawling crime drama, not comedy. Dense plotting and cultural specificity mean it demands more than one viewing to fully land.

Uncle From Another World2022
Both flip the homecoming narrative—an unexpected guest (or perspective) arrives and destabilizes everything. Both find humour in the gap between the mundane and the cosmic.
A Japanese anime where a man returns from a coma claiming he visited another world, and the show treats this with both deadpan comedy and genuine metaphysical oddness. Irreverent about authority without mocking sincere belief.
But Subtitled anime about cosmic horror and uncle-nephew relationships won't appeal to everyone. It's weird in ways that resist summary.
