Big laughs, surprisingly coherent, for anyone who likes their comedy pointed and irreverent.

The Pythons at their most gleefully anarchic — looser, sillier, and stuffed with quotable nonsense. If Brian is their disciplined film, this is the joyful mess that made them famous.

But It's sketch-shaped rather than story-shaped; some find the plotlessness wears thin by the end.

Both films use a bumbling nobody mistaken for a figure of immense significance to satirise the dangerous human need to follow charismatic leaders — one aimed at fascism, the other at faith.

Chaplin's satire of Hitler, made while the threat was still live, using slapstick and mistaken identity to deflate a tyrant the way Brian deflates religious mania.

But Its earnest closing speech breaks from comedy entirely — a tonal shift some find preachy after all the farce.

History of the World: Part I1981

Brooks romps through history the way Python romps through the Bible — sketch logic applied to sacred, self-serious material, with a similar gleeful disrespect for institutions.

But Baggier and less consistent than Brian; the hit rate on jokes dips in places.

A film that dares to make comedy out of something monstrous, and does it with such nerve and craft that it becomes a masterclass in tasteless-but-brilliant.

But The comedy curdles into real dread at points; not as consistently funny as it is unsettling.

Both provoked genuine outrage and bans for treating sacred and political targets with total irreverence, using absurdist comedy as a Trojan horse for real satire.

An animated musical that mocks censorship, war and religious hysteria with the same delighted blasphemy, proving crude cartoons can carry as much bite as costume drama.

But Deliberately vulgar and juvenile in a way Python rarely is — the shock comedy is cruder, louder, less clever-clever.

Both take the crucifixion-era Gospel narrative and retool it for a pop-culture form aimed at a mainstream audience, and both caused religious controversy on release for doing so.

A rock opera retelling of the Gospels from roughly the same era, sincere where Brian is satirical, showing how the same story can be reworked as spectacle instead of comedy.

But Played completely straight — no jokes, no distance — which will disappoint anyone hoping for Python-adjacent laughs.
