Eleanor Shellstrop

Eleanor wakes up dead and welcomed into the Good Place, only to realize almost immediately that some cosmic filing error has landed her there by mistake. She was, by her own cheerful admission, a pretty terrible person on Earth—selfish, lazy, a shameless liar—and now she's scrambling to fake her way into paradise before anyone notices.

The premise only works if you actually like the person who doesn't belong, and Kristen Bell makes Eleanor's selfishness so funny and specific—her margarita-shaped shrimp, her contempt for Soul Harvesting Day—that you're rooting for her fraud to succeed. Bell finds real vulnerability underneath the bluster: someone who's never had reason to be good and is genuinely startled that she might want to try.
