Heartstopper is a British teen drama built almost entirely out of small kindnesses — a shy, anxious artist and a rugby-playing golden retriever of a boy falling for each other in real time, blush by blush. It's soft, sincere and unashamedly hopeful, with none of the manufactured cruelty most teen shows rely on. Watch it when you want warmth without irony.

But Rougher edges, dated production values, and a much bleaker world pressing in around the romance.

Swap romance for riotous friendship — the same generous, specific take on British/Irish teenage life, just louder and funnier, with a troubled backdrop played for comedy.

But No central romance and a much more chaotic register — this is farce, not tenderness.

Same British queer-coming-of-age lineage and tenderness toward its young characters, but it shows the history and cost that make Heartstopper's ease feel so deliberately, hard-won.

Russell T Davies's miniseries about a group of young gay men in 1980s London living through the AIDS crisis — devastating, vital, and gorgeously alive before it breaks your heart.

But This is grief, not comfort — expect real anger and loss, nothing like Heartstopper's protective softness.
