Nimona
Nimona is a fizzing animated fantasy about a disgraced knight and a shape-shifting chaos gremlin who team up to expose institutional corruption. It's funny, gorgeously drawn, occasionally heartbreaking, and has something real to say about loyalty, belonging, and how systems destroy people. For anyone who loves character-driven storytelling with bite.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like animated fantasy that pokes fun at medieval pageantry while quietly prodding at institutions, and you enjoy a buddy pairing with sharp banter and a lot of visual invention.
Skip it if you want a tidy, grown-up thriller, since the mood stays playful even when the story turns sad and the jokes can undercut its more serious moments.
What it asks of you: Roughly ninety-nine minutes, brisk from the start, with plenty of visual chaos to track; background gags reward a wandering eye.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse2023
Dazzling animation that treats the medium as its own form of storytelling, a genuinely surprising plot, and characters you'll think about for weeks. The energy is infectious.
But It's the middle chapter of a trilogy, so it ends on a cliffhanger that will leave you frustrated until the finale arrives.

The Owl House2020
A Disney show that absolutely should not have this much heart, wit, and emotional depth. Charming characters, a richly imagined world, and a found-family story that earns every moment.
But The first season takes a few episodes to find its footing, and the show was cut short by the network, so the ending feels rushed.

Arcane: League of Legends2021
Stunning animation paired with characters you genuinely care about in a story where every choice matters. It's funny and brutal and beautiful. Even if you don't play League of Legends, you don't need to.
But Violence and emotional devastation are central to the story—it's not as light as its aesthetic might suggest.

Heartstopper2022
Both are about outsiders finding belonging in each other. Nimona and Ballister are bound by loyalty and found family; Nick and Charlie are bound by love. Both show how chosen family can be more real than bloodline, and animation allows both to render that belonging visually.
A charming, gentle series about teenagers in love, told with warmth and genuine sweetness. It trusts its audience to care about small moments and character connection.
But If you need plot momentum or stakes, you'll find it slow and slight. It's fundamentally a show about happiness, which some viewers find narratively unstimulating.

Craig of the Creek2018
Charming adventure series about friendship and discovery that treats kids with respect. Warm, inventive, and genuinely funny for all ages without being saccharine.
But It's deliberately low-stakes and gentle; if you want high-concept sci-fi or dark themes, this isn't it.

Amphibia2019
A girl gets transported to a frog world and builds real friendships across genuine differences. Funny, character-focused, with excellent voice acting and animation that only gets better.
But The first half-season can feel slight; the show becomes genuinely great once it commits to its character arcs.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power2018
A reboot that respects its source material while telling something fresh: found family, queer romance, and a villain whose redemption is complicated and real. Visually inventive.
But Season one's animation is notably stiff compared to later episodes, and some find the art style initially off-putting.

Moana2016
A gorgeously animated adventure with a lead character who's funny and capable, excellent songs, and a genuine sense of wonder. The pacing is tight and the emotional core is real.
But It does hit some Disney formula beats, and if you're tired of the House of Mouse, this won't change your mind.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts2020
A post-apocalyptic adventure that's fundamentally optimistic and joyful. Vivid animation, creative creature design, and a protagonist who solves problems with music, kindness, and ingenuity.
But The tone is relentlessly upbeat, which works against the story's darker elements rather than balancing them.

Hilda2018
A girl moves to the woods and discovers genuine magic and danger. Excellent voice work, inventive creature design, and characters who grow and change in ways that matter.
But Starts as episodic adventure before committing to serialization; some find the shift jarring or too slow initially.

Wendell & Wild2022
Both are animated stories about moral redemption that refuse to condemn their 'villains' outright. Nimona could be evil but isn't; the demons in Wendell & Wild are misunderstood. Both trust that people (or creatures) contain multitudes, and that loyalty and love matter more than simple categories.
Stop-motion animated film from Henry Selick that's visually inventive, genuinely funny, and surprisingly melancholy about grief and redemption. A demon love story wrapped in a heist plot.
But The plot meanders and doesn't always land; the visual ambition sometimes overwhelms the narrative coherence. It's a bit messy.
