Bros is a romantic comedy about two successful gay men navigating Manhattan life, ambition, and the terrifying possibility of letting someone in. It's funny, warm, and refreshingly specific—less about proving love exists and more about two real people figuring out if they can actually do it. For anyone who's loved a good romance but wanted it to feel lived-in and true.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a rom-com where the leads' fumbling, quick-fire banter is the main event, and you like a love story that sends up its own clichés as it goes.
Skip it if you tire of nonstop verbal sparring, since the jokes come so thick and fast that the quieter, tender moments can feel like they're waiting for a gap in the chatter.
What it asks of you: Roughly two hours, and it's talky and busy, with the laughs arriving one after another, so it wants your full attention rather than background company.

Heartstopper2022
A British teen romance that glows with genuine affection and charm. It's sincere without being saccharine, funny without undermining the real stakes of connection and self-discovery.
But If you find yourself allergic to earnestness or need your romance wrapped in irony to feel safe, this could feel a bit naked for you.

Red, White & Royal Blue2023
A gay romance that gets to be fun and romantic without needing to suffer for it. Smart banter, real chemistry, and a genuine sense of joy in watching two people find each other.
But The political plotting is pretty light, and if you're looking for substance beneath the charm, you might find it thin.

I Love You, Man2009
A bromance that understands why male friendships matter and why it's hard to let someone romantic upend that. Funny, specific, and surprisingly tender about intimacy in all its forms.
But It's a straight romance underneath, so it's observing these dynamics from outside rather than living them. That distance might matter to you.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
My Own Private Idaho1991
Both films understand that love can be shy and funny and uncertain without being unreal. Both are interested in what happens between two men who don't know quite how to want each other yet.
Gus Van Sant's elliptical, poetic film about two hustlers on the road, searching for home and each other. It moves like a dream and feels urgent about male connection in ways most films won't attempt. Formally radical and genuinely moving.
But It's deliberately paced, oblique, and sometimes alienating. Narrative clarity is not its priority, and that will lose people looking for a story to follow.

Love, Simon2018
A high school romance that refuses to make gayness the tragedy of the story. It's about belonging, about finding someone who sees you, and it lets that be enough to be everything.
But It's polished and mainstream-friendly, which means it can feel a bit sanitized if you want your queer stories rougher or stranger.

The Half of It2020
A triangle romance that's smart and funny and genuinely interested in how desire, friendship, and identity tangle together. Beautifully shot and written with real wit.
But It's a coming-of-age story first, a romance second. If you need the love plot front and center, this won't satisfy that.

Happiest Season2020
A Christmas romance that uses the family chaos as a real backdrop for commitment anxiety and fear of visibility. It's warm and genuinely funny and wants its people to win.
But The third act resolves faster than you might believe it should. It can feel a bit tidy for the mess it builds.

Fire Island2022
A gay romance that's loose and raunchy and unapologetic about bodies and desire. It's a Jane Austen adaptation for people who want Austen with muscle and sex and real joy.
But The structure is deliberately meandering, and the tone shifts between zany and sincere. That tonal whiplash will frustrate people wanting consistency.

Pride2014
A Welsh mining town and London activists find each other over the AIDS crisis. It's funny and moving and proves that solidarity and love are the same fight, told with real heart.
But It's a period piece about activism, not primarily a romance. The historical weight sits heavy, and lightness isn't its mode.

Dumplin'2018
Both films believe that you can be ambitious and successful and still terrified of intimacy. Both are funny about the armor we wear and kind about taking it off.
A plus-size pageant comedy from a Dolly Parton musical that becomes genuinely moving about self-love, her mother, and finding people who see you whole. It's warm and sharp and unexpectedly layered.
But The beauty-pageant plot is exactly as straightforward as it sounds. If you need your comedy darker or less earnest about self-acceptance, this might feel too sunny.

Cabaret1972
Both are about two people in a city that never stops moving, asking if love can matter when ambition and self-preservation are so loud. Both refuse easy answers.
Berlin, 1931, a kit kat club, and two people drawn to each other while history burns outside. It's about desire and complacency and what love asks of you when the world is ending. Visually gorgeous, morally complicated, unforgettable.
But It's a 1972 adaptation of a stage musical—the tone is arch and theatrical and demands you meet it there. If you need naturalism or contemporary pacing, this will feel mannered.
