Pray the Gay Away

A closeted college student and his boyfriend hatch a scheme to trick his conservative parents into funding a Palm Springs trip instead of conversion therapy. This sharp, lean 11-minute film finds dark comedy in the gap between what parents believe they're paying for and what actually happens—a story about survival, deception, and the absurd lengths queer people have gone to just to breathe.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy a quick, cheeky caper where a made-up plan is tested on very earnest parents, and a small story lands harder because it knows exactly when to stop.

Skip it if it is over before its premise has much room to breathe, so if you want characters given space to develop slowly, you will likely find it slight.

What it asks of you: Eleven minutes, brisk and light in tone, with almost no slack, so it takes a single sitting and barely any commitment before the credits roll.

Love, Simon2018

A coming-of-age romance about a closeted gay teen navigating first love and family acceptance. Sweet-natured but substantial, with genuine warmth and humor that doesn't shy from the real stakes of hiding who you are.

But It resolves toward comfort and acceptance in ways that can feel a little neat. If you want harder edges, this might feel safe.

The Half of It2020

A closeted Chinese-American girl in a small town uses her writing skills to help a jock woo the girl they both love. Clever, tender, and genuinely funny—it's about identity, desire, and the performance we all do for others.

But It's contemplative and slow-moving. Some viewers find the pacing glacial where others find it meditative.

Moonlight2016

A Black gay man's life unfolds across three chapters: childhood, adolescence, adulthood. Visually stunning and emotionally devastating, about identity, survival, and the people who love us despite everything. One of the great American films.

But It's quiet and demands your full attention. There's little plot in the traditional sense, and the sadness sits heavy. Not cathartic—just honest.

Prayers for the Stolen2021

Both show young people performing false selves for parental safety. One is a comedy of escape; this is a tragedy of enclosure. Different registers, same pressure.

A girl grows up in a Mexican village where families hide their daughters from cartels. Shot with stunning visual poetry, it's about childhood, danger, desire, and girls becoming women in impossible circumstances. Hypnotic and heartbreaking.

But It's in Spanish, visually oblique, and the plot is minimal. If you need clarity and momentum, this won't give it. The beauty can feel distant from the suffering.

Heartstopper2022

A British high school romance between two boys who fall in love. Genuinely joyful without being saccharine—it's about the lightness and joy of queerness, not just the struggle. Colorful, funny, and achingly sweet.

But If you're allergic to sincerity or need cynicism in your love stories, this relentless optimism might wear thin fast.

Schitt's Creek2015

A wealthy family loses everything and moves to a struggling small town they once bought as a joke. What begins as fish-out-of-water comedy becomes a genuinely moving story about found family and self-acceptance, with a queer love story at its heart.

But The first season is rough and the humor broader than it becomes. It asks patience before it becomes unmissable.

Everything Everywhere All at Once2022

A Chinese-American woman jumps between parallel universes to prevent interdimensional catastrophe and save her relationship with her daughter. Kinetic, hilarious, absurd, and gut-wrenching—a film that contains multitudes.

But It's overwhelming by design: tonal whiplash, rapid editing, and visual chaos. Some people find it exhausting rather than exhilarating.

Red, White & Royal Blue2023

The First Son and a British Prince clash at an event, fall into a secret correspondence, then deeper. A glossy romantic comedy that's smarter than it looks, funny, and genuinely invested in its characters' happiness.

But It's a candy-colored fantasy of privilege and acceptance. Real life and real consequences stay mostly offscreen.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post2018

A queer teenager is sent to conversion therapy and makes unlikely friendships in resistance. Based on a novel that understands both the horror and the humor of these institutions, with performances that cut deep.

But It straddles dark comedy and genuine trauma—the tonal shifts can feel uneven. Some scenes are painful in ways the film doesn't fully earn.

Desierto2015

A man hunts undocumented migrants crossing the US-Mexico border. A spare, brutal thriller about cruelty, vulnerability, and survival. Uncomfortable in the best way—cinema that doesn't look away.

But It's relentlessly bleak and violent with minimal dialogue. There's no comfort here, only the clarity of predator and prey. Not for everyone, and that's fine.
