This is the granddaddy of star-stuffed comedies: a three-hour demolition derby of egos in which a dozen respectable strangers hear about buried loot and become instant enemies. It's loud, enormous, and shameless — Cinerama-scaled slapstick with a cast list longer than the film deserves. Watch it for scale and chaos, not subtlety, and settle in.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love big, shouting ensemble comedy where a crowd of mismatched schemers keeps tumbling over each other in a chase that never lets up, and you don't mind the excess.

Skip it if you find long slapstick routines tiresome or want a lean story; at three hours and change, the cheerful racket can wear thin well before the final stretch.

What it asks of you: Its length is a real commitment at over three hours, and the pace rarely eases, with gags stacking in long, loud sequences rather than quiet scenes.

Same engine, opposite register: strip out the slapstick and the buried-money farce becomes a study of what greed actually does to people, played for dread instead of laughs.

The same premise — ordinary people, buried fortune, greed dissolving decency — but played dead straight, and devastating for it. Humphrey Bogart's descent is the tragedy your comedy was quietly circling all along.

But It's slow, tense and genuinely bleak — nothing here is trying to make you laugh.

A scrappier, meaner cousin — small-time schemers screwing each other over for money, with the same belief that greed makes otherwise normal people into gleeful monsters.

Wacky Races1968

Direct lineage: Hanna-Barbera built this series explicitly as an animated version of the all-star race-for-a-prize comedy, distilling the format down to its purest, silliest shape.

A Saturday-morning cartoon literally invented because of this film and The Great Race — a dozen cars, a dozen cheats, one prize, and none of the collateral damage since everyone's a cartoon.

But It's a kids' show — repetitive, simple, and eleven minutes an episode instead of three hours.

A Simple Plan1998

The identical inciting idea — strangers stumble on a fortune and immediately start destroying each other for it — reworked as noir instead of farce, showing how thin the line between the two really is.

Found money again, but this time it's snow-covered Minnesota, a tiny cast, and a slow-motion moral collapse instead of a demolition derby. Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton play the same temptation for keeps.

But It's a grim, quiet thriller with almost no comedy — the polar opposite mood to what you just watched.
