Dreamgirls
A glossy, big-lunged musical about ambition, betrayal, and who gets to be a star, loosely inspired by the rise of The Supremes. It's Broadway brought to the screen with real teeth — sequins and heartbreak in equal measure, anchored by Jennifer Hudson's volcanic breakout performance. For anyone who wants a good cry set to a killer belt.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love backstage musicals where the songs carry the emotional weight, and you don't mind a big, glossy, melodramatic sweep to get there.
Skip it if you want restraint, quiet pacing or a tight plot, because this is loud, ambitious and often overstuffed with show-stopping numbers and ballads.
What it asks of you: It runs over two hours and keeps swinging between fierce stage performance and heavy personal turbulence, so settle in and let the big voices and big emotions wash over you.

But Its jazz-age satire is cooler and more knowing than Dreamgirls' sincerity — less of a good cry.

Jamie Foxx on the other side of the music-industry machine, playing the genius instead of the operator, in a biopic that doesn't flinch from the ugliness beneath the sound.
But It's a straighter, more conventional biopic — no ensemble fireworks, no big group numbers.

Jennifer Hudson again, this time as Aretha Franklin, carrying a music biopic almost single-handedly — if you loved her Effie, this is the victory lap.
But More reverent and hagiographic than Dreamgirls, with less of its dramatic bite.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Whiplash2014
Same engine as Curtis and his girls — a man deciding how far to push a performer's gift, and what it costs them — reboxed as a punishing two-hander thriller instead of a musical.
Swap the sequins for a jazz practice room and you get the same story stripped to its nerve: a controlling mentor deciding exactly how much of someone else's talent he's allowed to own.
But No music-industry glamour at all — it's tense, claustrophobic, and nearly monochrome by comparison.

But It's candy-colored and comic where Dreamgirls goes for the gut — very different emotional register.

The real, rougher story of Chess Records, with Beyoncé this time playing Etta James — a grittier look at Black artists being packaged and exploited by the industry.
But Messier and less polished as a film; the storytelling can feel rushed compared to Dreamgirls' shine.
A Star Is Born2018
Another music-world tragedy about who gets to keep shining and who gets left behind, with vocal performances that hit as hard as any Dreamgirls number.
But It's a two-hander romance rather than an ensemble piece — a very different shape of story.
Sparkle2012
The most direct cousin here: a girl-group melodrama about sisterhood, ambition, and a controlling man, with Whitney Houston in her final film role.
But Lower budget and less confident filmmaking — it's the B-side, not the hit.
Bohemian Rhapsody2018
Another crowd-pleasing music biopic built around a magnetic lead performance and stadium-sized emotional peaks, if you just want the genre's pleasures again.
But Cleans up its subject's real messiness far more than Dreamgirls ever does with its characters.
The Bodyguard1992
An older, simpler take on the pressures of Black female stardom, anchored by Whitney Houston at the peak of her own real-life pop powers.
But It's a romantic thriller first, music drama second — the connection is mostly in spirit.
Cabin in the Sky1943
It's the historical root system Dreamgirls is telling a fictionalized descendant of — Black singers with enormous talent, fighting an entertainment machine built without them in mind.
MGM's first all-Black-cast musical, made decades before Dreamgirls, with astonishing vocal talent hemmed in by an industry that barely knew what to do with it.
But Dated in its politics and stagecraft, and its supernatural framing device will feel very old-fashioned now.
Amy2015
Strip away the fiction and the sequins and this is Effie's story told for real, in a different medium, with a tragic ending nobody gets to rewrite.
A documentary about Amy Winehouse that shows, in unbearable real footage, exactly the arc Dreamgirls dramatizes — a woman's talent consumed by the people and industry around her.
But There's no redemption arc here and no big finale — it's grief, not a musical number, and it stays with you.
