De-Lovely
A stylish, intimate musical biography of Cole Porter and Linda Lee Thomas, tracing their glamorous and unconventional marriage from Paris through Hollywood. De-Lovely frames their relationship as a creative partnership, with contemporary performances of Porter's standards woven into the narrative. It's a film for anyone who loves Golden Age songcraft, sophisticated romance, and the particular melancholy of loving someone you can't entirely keep.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love musicals built from witty lyrics and standards sung inside a backstage-style life, where the songs carry the emotional weight and a glossy, romantic surface hides real ache underneath.
Skip it if you want a tight plot with a clear dramatic spine, since this is more a sequence of lavish set pieces and reflective moments than a story that drives steadily toward a destination.
What it asks of you: Settle in for just over two hours of ornate, unhurried scenes, with the tone shifting between sparkle and melancholy, and let the music and the performances do much of the telling.

Singin' in the Rain1952
The gold standard of musical filmmaking: joy, virtuosity, and genuine emotion in perfect balance. If you loved the songs in De-Lovely, here's where mid-century American songcraft reached its apex.
But It's nearly seventy years old and doesn't pretend otherwise. The narrative is thin, and some of the humour hasn't aged as gracefully as the dancing.

Dreamgirls2006
A sweeping drama about artistry, ambition, and the cost of stardom, with world-class performances and some of the best musical moments in recent cinema. Similar emotional stakes to De-Lovely.
But The second half loses focus, and the ending arrives abruptly. The film occasionally confuses spectacle with depth.

Rocketman2019
A vibrant, uninhibited musical biography that uses Elton John's catalogue the way De-Lovely uses Porter's—as a window into emotional truth. It finds real pathos in the life of a difficult genius.
But It's aggressively stylised to the point of camp. The fantasy sequences wear out their welcome, and the chronology is deliberately scrambled.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Funny Girl1968
Both films frame a woman's artistic partnership with a charismatic, flawed man as the central relationship, but where De-Lovely asks what Linda gained, Funny Girl asks what Fanny lost.
Barbra Streisand's only Oscar nomination and her first film role. It's a star vehicle that actually earns it—a woman defining herself against a man's shadow, with songs that build her interior life. The intelligence and ambition rival anything in De-Lovely.
But It's nearly three hours, episodic, and Streisand can overwhelm the frame. The ending shifts register abruptly and feels tacked-on.

Moulin Rouge!2001
A visual feast about art, love, and the theatre, with a colour palette and energy that make you feel drunk on cinema. The romantic core is genuine despite the chaos surrounding it.
But Baz Luhrmann's style is exhausting for some viewers. If you prefer elegance to frenzy, this will feel like being shouted at for two hours.

Midnight in Paris2011
A love letter to artistic Paris and the writers and musicians who made it magical. The romance is tender, and it captures the specific longing for a more cultured past that animates De-Lovely.
But It's a Woody Allen film, which will be a dealbreaker for some. The whimsy can tip into preciousness, and the ending is neat in ways that feel unearned.

La La Land2016
A contemporary musical about artistic ambition and the price of love, with genuinely lovely musical sequences and a melancholic view of fame. It understands the Porter paradox: that beauty and heartbreak are inseparable.
But The plotting is thin and the characters underdeveloped. For many viewers, the self-seriousness of the romance doesn't match its actual complexity.

The Artist2011
A silent film about silent film, made with total conviction and formal beauty. It captures the glamour and fragility of showbusiness in a way that feels ancestral to De-Lovely.
But It's in black and white and silent. If you need constant stimulation or dialogue to stay engaged, you won't make it through.

Funny Face1957
A jewel-box musical with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn, set in Paris, full of George and Ira Gershwin songs. It's lighter than De-Lovely but made with similar craft and affection.
But The romantic dynamics haven't aged well. Astaire's character pursues Hepburn's in ways that read as stalking, and the film doesn't seem to notice.

The Phantom of the Opera2004
A lush, earnest adaptation of Lloyd Webber's musical about obsessive love and the costs of passion. It takes itself seriously in a way that occasionally finds real emotion.
But It's deeply ungainly in places, with ham-fisted direction and a lead performance that struggles with the vocal demands. Long stretches feel stodgy and ponderous.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie2016
Both celebrate a particular flavor of sophisticated hedonism—the refusal to be ordinary—as a legitimate life choice, even when it costs something.
A British comedy where two middle-aged women pursue glamour, excess, and relevance with complete commitment. It's frivolous and caustic where De-Lovely is romantic, but both understand that style and taste are a form of rebellion.
But The humour is very specifically British and dated to the 90s. If you don't already love the characters, this will feel like an inside joke you're not invited to.
