The X Factor
Other titles called The X Factor: the 2004 series (ITV1).
- Musical
- Light-hearted
The X Factor USA was the definitive 2010s talent competition: Simon Cowell's blunt judging, celebrity panelists, and the genuine thrill of watching unknown singers get their shot. It's carnivalesque, often absurd, sometimes moving. For anyone who wants to watch real people discover they can sing, or witness spectacular failure in real time, with Cowell's eyebrow as a supporting character.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you find real pleasure in weekly talent shows where the drama comes from judges' opinions and the nerve of ordinary people singing live.
Skip it if the format runs long and repeats itself, with every episode padded by auditions and sob stories, so the appeal wears thin if you dislike reality television's manufactured emotion.
What it asks of you: Seventy-nine episodes at around two hours each, so it asks for stamina more than close attention, with long stretches you can half-watch while doing something else.

American Idol2002
The DNA source. Idol invented the modern singing competition format with better song arrangements, more varied talent, and Randy Jackson's devastating 'that's a no from me, dog.'
But It had 15 seasons before going off-air in 2016, and early seasons are genuinely unwatchable padding between the three good moments per episode.

The Voice2011
The X Factor's most successful competitor. Blind auditions, coach battles, genuine chemistry between judges, and a format that lets singers choose their mentors. It's kinder without being soft.
But The gimmick of the spinning chairs becomes repetitive after season two. Coaches matter more than contestants, which is the opposite of what you want.

Britain's Got Talent2007
Simon Cowell again, but looser and funnier. The range—magicians, dancers, comedians, one dog—keeps it unpredictable. The surprise factor is much higher than X Factor ever managed.
But It's genuinely uneven. For every transcendent moment there are ten acts that exist only to be mocked. The editing leans heavily on humiliation.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Vox Lux2018
Both show the machinery of pop stardom, but Vox Lux reveals the horror underneath X Factor's cheerful surface. It's the dark mirror of manufactured celebrity.
Natalie Portman as a pop star created after a tragedy. It's a dark, visionary film about the construction and commodification of fame—what X Factor winners' lives become when the camera keeps running. Sia-like industrial pop aesthetic.
But It's deliberately alienating and difficult. The structure jumps in time, the narrative is fractured, and it offers no comfort. Some will find it pretentious.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping2016
The Lonely Island's sendup of the music industry and manufactured celebrity. It's a scathing, hilarious riff on talent shows, boy bands, and the machinery that turns X Factor winners into disposable stars.
But The humor is very specific to digital comedy culture of the early 2010s. If you don't know The Lonely Island, it's just a succession of weird sketches.

Dreamgirls2006
The ur-text about manufactured pop stardom. Beyoncé, Eddie Murphy, and Jennifer Hudson in a story about ambition, exploitation, and the cost of fame. It has the X Factor's emotional stakes without the kitsch.
But It's heavy. The film is interested in trauma and betrayal, not the fun spectacle of a competition. The tone is entirely serious.

Nashville2012
If you loved X Factor for the behind-the-scenes drama and industry politics, Nashville goes deeper. It's about established artists navigating fame, mentorship, and the music business with real stakes.
But It's a dense ensemble show about music royalty, not a competition. If you watched X Factor for the auditions and eliminations, this won't scratch that itch.

Uncut Gems2019
Adam Sandler in a high-pressure performance about someone desperately chasing a big break. The same frenetic energy and desperation that makes X Factor compelling, but in a jeweller's safe in Manhattan.
But It's aggressively stressful. There's no cathartic payoff, just mounting dread and bad decisions. It's the opposite of feel-good.

8 Mile2002
Eminem's film about an underground rapper working toward a big moment. It captures the genuine hunger and vulnerability of wanting to be discovered—what X Factor contestants feel before the judges' table.
But It's bleak and slow. The climactic battle is brief. If you want spectacle and polish, you'll find it gritty and unglamorous.

A Star Is Born2018
Lady Gaga's acting debut as an undiscovered singer discovered at the right moment. It's genuinely moving, with incredible performances and a reminder of why we care about talent being found.
But It's a tragedy. Beautiful but devastating. You'll cry, and not from joy. The fame discovery fantasy ends in real pain.

Synecdoche, New York2008
Both are about the gap between who people really are and who they're packaged as being, but Synecdoche collapses the distinction into existential horror. X Factor asks 'can you sing?' Synecdoche asks 'who are you pretending to be, and when did it become real?'
Philip Seymour Hoffman as a theatre director creating an increasingly elaborate replica of the city and everyone in it. It's a baroque, unsettling meditation on creation, authenticity, and the impossibility of capturing real life. Utterly singular.
But It's confusing, almost three hours long, and designed to be uncomfortable. You won't leave satisfied. Many viewers find it a slog.
