Sparkle

Other titles called Sparkle: the 1976 film.

Sparkle is a Motown-era musical drama about three sisters fighting to break into the music industry while their family fractures under the weight of secrets, ambition, and trauma. It's a showcase for voices—especially Whitney Houston's—wrapped in a story about female rivalry, protective love, and the cost of stardom. Best watched for the performances and period detail.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love a backstage-to-stage musical where the songs grow out of family friction and a young woman's ambition, and you don't mind melodrama with your harmonies.

Skip it if you want a tight, grounded music biopic, since this leans on soapy family turns and sung set pieces more than on the nuts and bolts of the industry.

What it asks of you: Expect a run just under two hours and a melodramatic pitch that rises and falls with each number, so let the songs carry the weight.

Dreamgirls2006

A glittering, muscular account of a Black girl group's rise through the music industry, with jaw-dropping performances from Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson. The glamour and the heartbreak land equally hard.

But At 169 minutes it's a commitment, and some of the plot mechanics feel dated. The tone can veer into melodrama.

Lady Sings the Blues1972

Diana Ross carries this Billie Holiday biopic with stunning vocal presence, capturing both the artist's defiance and vulnerability. Gorgeously shot, deeply felt, and a crucial text for Black musical cinema.

But The script simplifies Holiday's life considerably. Pacing dips in the middle hour.

Carmen Jones1954

A bold, all-Black operatic adaptation set in the American South with vivid Technicolor and astonishing musical numbers. Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte bring smoldering intensity to every scene.

But The plot is thin by design—it's there to hang the music on. Some of the gender politics feel antique.

Something you would not have found on your own.

The Bodyguard1992

Both are vehicles for a vocalist's power rather than acting strength. Both are interested in protecting someone rather than action. Both understand that the right song can say what dialogue cannot.

Whitney Houston's only major film role, where she carries a romantic thriller with remarkable presence and then sings 'I Will Always Love You' in a way that rewrote popular music. It's her, essentially, which is everything.

But The plot is a paint-by-numbers thriller; Kevin Costner is wooden; the film exists largely as a vehicle for one song. It's shameless in that regard.

Respect2021

Jennifer Hudson embodies Aretha Franklin with both power and vulnerability, tracing her journey from church singer to the Queen of Soul. The music is phenomenal and the intimate moments are quietly devastating.

But It covers familiar biopic ground and doesn't always interrogate its own sentimentality. Some scenes feel overcooked.

The Five Heartbeats1991

A loving, funny, meticulously detailed story of an R&B group's rise and fall across three decades. Robert Townsend's direction captures both the glamour and the exploitation with wit and affection.

But It's long and episodic, which gives it texture but can feel baggy. Some of the humor hasn't aged perfectly.

Mahogany1975

Diana Ross is a Chicago fashion model chasing stardom in Rome in this dizzy, gorgeously composed fantasy. It's style over substance, but the style is so seductive you won't mind.

But The plot is paper-thin and the romantic resolution feels uncomfortable by modern standards. It's a fashion commercial, really.

Romance & Cigarettes2006

A musical romance set among working-class Brooklyn families, featuring an extraordinary range of songs from rock to soul to standards. The cast commits fully to the unabashed emotion and the sudden choreography.

But The tonal whiplash isn't for everyone—it can feel chaotic. Some viewers find the sexual politics murky.

Ain't Them Bodies Saints2013

A lyrical crime story with a blues-tinged soundtrack and performances from Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara that convey love through gesture rather than words. Beautiful and melancholic.

But It's deliberately slow and impressionistic. If you need plot momentum or dialogue to carry you, this will frustrate.

Killing Zoe1993

Both treat cities as characters and use music and color to convey emotional states rather than plot. Both are interested in romance as a form of escape or destruction. Both are flawed but committed to their own logic.

A neon-soaked, dreamlike crime film that unfolds almost like a fever dream. Jean-Claude Van Damme plays against type as a romantic lead in Paris, and the sound design uses music as mood rather than plot.

But It's an art film masquerading as a heist movie. There's almost no traditional narrative satisfaction. Some sequences are gratuitously violent in ways that feel unmotivated.
