Queens

Four women reconnect in middle age to revive their '90s hip-hop group, the Nasty Bitches. Queens blends nostalgia, ambition, and genuine friendship struggles into a drama that celebrates women reclaiming space and relevance. It's for anyone who loves ensemble casts, hip-hop history, and stories about reinvention that don't pretend second acts are easy.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love comeback stories about talented, flawed women who still have plenty of bite, and you enjoy a glossy soap-style drama with a strong pop and hip-hop soundtrack running underneath it.

Skip it if you want a tightly plotted, grounded story; this one leans on soap-opera melodrama and heightened twists, and its humor can feel broad rather than sharp.

What it asks of you: Thirteen hour-long episodes that move quickly and keep switching between rehearsal-room chaos and personal drama, so you can settle in without needing to track a dense mystery.

Empire2015

Another ensemble music drama with high stakes, family conflict, and a richly drawn cast navigating power and legacy. If you loved the chemistry and drama in Queens, this delivers similar emotional weight.

But The show spans six seasons and becomes genuinely convoluted by the end. Requires patience with increasingly complicated plotting.

Dreamgirls2006

The cinematic DNA of Queens: a female musical group's rise, fall, and reckoning with fame, aging, and artistic integrity. Jamie Foxx and Beyoncé anchor this story of women fighting for control.

But A three-hour film from 1981 moves differently than modern TV. Some may find the theatrical style dated, though that's part of its power.

The Chi2018

Lena Waithe's ensemble series captures community, music, and survival in contemporary Black America. Similar focus on character over spectacle, with genuine warmth alongside serious stakes.

But Shifts focus between characters unpredictably. Some plotlines resolve cleanly while others drift. Not always as satisfying as queens' narrative structure.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Respect2021

Both center women in their power, reclaiming narrative control after being underestimated or sidelined. Both interrogate what fame demands and what it costs.

Aretha Franklin's life story from childhood through stardom and beyond. Like Queens, it's about a woman fighting for her voice—literally and artistically—and refusing to fade.

But A biopic, not a fictional drama. More reverent and serious in tone. Focuses on one person's arc rather than an ensemble's dynamic.

Pose2018

An ensemble cast doing beautiful work in a world built on music, performance, and found family. Celebrates marginalized people creating art and joy in impossible circumstances. Deeply moving.

But The show can be emotionally punishing. Heavy themes of AIDS, discrimination, and loss are woven throughout. Not escapist entertainment.

Bodyguard2018

A tight, character-driven ensemble where personal rivalries and ambitions collide with professional duty. No filler—every episode moves the stakes higher.

But A British political thriller, not a music drama. Tonally and culturally quite different. Jump requires adjusting expectations entirely.

Godfather of Harlem2019

Ensemble crime drama set in '60s Harlem with fantastic chemistry between leads and a real sense of place and community. Character-focused storytelling with genuine stakes.

But Much darker and more violent than Queens. Lacks the humor and warmth that balance the drama in the series you're looking for.

Godfather of Harlem poster

Insecure2016

Issa Rae's series is effortlessly funny and emotionally intelligent about friendship, ambition, and Black life in LA. Lighter touch than Queens but similar emotional authenticity.

But More introspective and comedy-focused. If you're after music-world stakes and high drama, this won't scratch that itch.

The Get Down2016

Baz Luhrmann's love letter to '70s hip-hop culture with energy, music, and genuine passion for the era. Stunning visuals and infectious enthusiasm.

But Cancelled after two seasons on a cliffhanger. Never concludes. Also, the show's style is so heightened it sometimes overwhelms the story.

Trend2023

Both follow middle-aged women who reunite around a shared project, rediscovering themselves and each other. Both celebrate female friendship without sentimentality.

A South Korean mockumentary-style series about five women creating a makeup brand. Hilarious, clever ensemble comedy built on genuine friendship and mutual respect amid chaos.

But It's a comedy from another country with a completely different tone. If you need hip-hop and American '90s nostalgia, this isn't it. Language and cultural context matter.
