Same fondness for pop-culture fantasy cutaways and a scrappy ensemble learning to love each other under fluorescent lights, just swap the hospital for community college. The structural playfulness rivals Scrubs' visual gags, and the emotional gut-punches land just as hard.

But Gets increasingly meta and self-referential in later seasons, which some find delightful and others find exhausting.

Same creator, same rhythm: fast jokes, a tight-knit found family, and a camera that loves a good non-sequitur. If you miss the specific cadence of Bill Lawrence's writing, this scratches that exact itch.

But Early episodes lean hard into the title's cougar-dating premise before it finds its real, better groove.

The blueprint for tonal whiplash comedy: doctors cracking jokes over the operating table to survive the unspeakable. Scrubs owes it a direct debt, right down to the way silliness suddenly turns into grief.

But Set during the Korean War with a laugh track and 1970s pacing that can feel slow by modern standards.

Barney Miller1975

Same structural DNA: an overworked institution, a rotating cast of weirdos passing through, and a tonal seesaw between absurd comedy and real human weight, done a generation before Scrubs made it its trademark.

A 1970s sitcom set in a Greenwich Village police squad room that pulled off exactly what Scrubs would later do: jokes and genuine pathos sharing the same scene, sometimes the same sentence.

But Studio-bound, laugh-track sitcom pacing that's a world away from Scrubs' visual invention — this is theatre, not cinema.

The Office2005

Trade the hospital for a paper company but keep the ensemble of lovable weirdos, the will-they-won't-they, and the slow-build emotional payoffs that sneak up on you between the jokes.

But Mockumentary format and a much slower burn in the first season put some viewers off before it earns its reputation.

House2004

Perry Cox's acid wit gets its own show here, minus the softness — a brilliant, brutal diagnostician who can't stop insulting everyone who loves him. Same hospital corridors, much colder weather.

But Formulaic case-of-the-week structure repeats itself hard across eight seasons, and House himself never really grows.

Ted Lasso2020

A different workplace, a different sport, but the same insistence that sincerity and jokes can share a scene without either one flinching. Its heart is as unguarded as Scrubs' best episodes.

But The relentless positivity and folksy wisdom can feel syrupy if you're not in the mood for it.

Parks and Recreation2009

Government bureaucracy stands in for the hospital, but the formula holds: a big ensemble of oddballs who genuinely, unfashionably like each other, building to jokes that occasionally break your heart.

But The first season is famously rough and doesn't represent what the show becomes — you have to push through it.

Grey's Anatomy2005

Same hospital, same green scrubs, dialed up into full melodrama — surgeons falling in love and dying in dramatic, operatic fashion. If you want the stakes without the jokes, this is it.

But Runs for twenty-plus seasons and leans hard into soap opera; the tonal restraint Scrubs has is nowhere to be found.

ER1994

The serious, unglamorous cousin — real medical crises played entirely straight, with an ensemble cast finding their footing there. It's the gravity Scrubs occasionally reaches for, sustained across a whole series.

But No comic relief cushion here; it's a much heavier, more clinical watch with none of Scrubs' warmth.

Lenox Hill2020

Scrubs is a fantasy version of medical residency; this is the documentary reality underneath it — same exhaustion, same absurd hours, same impossible emotional whiplash, but nobody wrote the jokes.

A documentary series following real doctors at a New York hospital through births, brain surgery, and burnout. It's the unscripted mirror to everything Scrubs plays for laughs — the exhaustion, the euphoria, the grief.

But There's no laugh track to cushion the hard moments; some of what happens on screen is genuinely difficult to watch.

The Bear2022

Same engine, different costume: a chaotic professional kitchen instead of a hospital ward, but the same idea that competence under extreme pressure is where found families get forged, and where comedy and trauma sit side by side.

Swap the hospital for a Chicago sandwich shop and the stakes stay just as high: a pressure-cooker workplace family screaming at each other one minute, holding each other up the next.

But Far more anxious and claustrophobic than Scrubs ever gets — the humour is there, but it's sharper and less comforting.
