Dr. Robert "Bob" Kelso

Bob Kelso runs Sacred Heart Hospital with the cheerful ruthlessness of a man who has stopped pretending medicine is a calling rather than a budget line. As Chief of Medicine, he's the obstacle J.D. and the other residents keep running into: cutting corners, dodging lawsuits, and delivering bad news to patients with a smile that never quite reaches sincerity.

Ken Jenkins plays the bureaucratic villain so gleefully that Kelso becomes the show's best argument against easy cynicism — every time you're ready to hate him outright, the writing lets a flash of competence or unexpected decency through. That refusal to let him settle into pure caricature, delivered with Jenkins's dry, unbothered timing, is what makes him more than a punchline.
