Love Life

Love Life is a romantic comedy anthology where each season follows a different person through their relationship history. Anna Kendrick stars in season one as Darby, navigating the mess of modern dating and love in New York. It's thoughtful without being heavy, funny without being mean, and genuinely interested in why people connect or don't. For anyone who loves romance but also recognizes it's complicated.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy romantic comedy that treats each relationship as its own self-contained story, where the charm lies in small observations about how people fall in and out of love.

Skip it if you want a single through-line or a slowly building central couple, since each episode jumps to a new romance and the season-long arc stays light.

What it asks of you: Half-hour episodes, each a self-contained chapter with its own emotional arc, so it pays off when you watch one at a time rather than racing through.

Fleabag2016

Phoebe Waller-Bridge's masterpiece about a sharp, damaged woman navigating love and family with devastating wit. Like Love Life but with more edge, more family chaos, and an even better sense of how people sabotage themselves.

But The fourth wall breaks and style-over-substance periods early on might feel gimmicky. It gets better, but the first episodes are the weakest.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend2015

A musical romantic comedy that takes its protagonist's contradictions seriously. Brilliant at showing how you can love someone and still be wrong for each other, with genuine emotional stakes underneath the comedy.

But The protagonist is deliberately insufferable for much of the run. Some people find the musical numbers intrusive rather than charming.

Shrinking2023

Bill Lawrence's comedy-drama about a grieving therapist and his mentor learning to live again. Warm, funny, and honest about how relationships work when you're broken. Jason Segel and Harrison Ford are perfect together.

But It swings between sitcom tone and genuine grief, which can feel tonally uneven. Some storylines resolve too neatly for the emotional weight they carry.

Someone Great2019

Both understand that the real story of a life isn't the romantic relationships but the accumulation of connections and how they shape who you become.

A film about a woman processing her mother's death by taking a cross-country trip with her best friends. It's ostensibly about grief, but it's structured like a love story—about the relationships that matter more than romance.

But It's emotionally heavy and doesn't pull its punches about mortality. The road-trip energy clashes with the weight of the subject matter.

Master of None2015

Aziz Ansari's love letter to New York and relationships. Season two especially is a gem about marriage and what happens after you find someone. Funny, cinematic, warm without being saccharine.

But Early seasons lean heavily on Ansari's stand-up sensibility, which hasn't aged perfectly. The show takes itself more seriously than some viewers want from a comedy.

You're the Worst2014

A romantic comedy where two terrible people fall in love and stay in love despite themselves. Genuinely funny, surprisingly moving, and uninterested in making its leads likeable as a condition of care.

But The humor is cruel and the characters are meant to be awful. If you need your romantic leads to be good people, this won't work for you.

Scrubs2001

The seasons where it focuses on JD and Elliot's will-they-won't-they romance are genuinely excellent: funny, sweet, and willing to let the relationship breathe. The ensemble cast makes everything better.

But The show runs eight seasons and loses its way badly in later years. You'll know when to stop, but the temptation to keep going is strong.

Normal People2020

A study of one relationship across years and circumstance. Intimate, honest, and interested in how love persists even when it shouldn't. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal are extraordinary together.

But It's slow-burn and bleak in places. If you need narrative momentum and optimism, the show's patience might feel like punishment rather than meditation.

Undone2019

A rotoscoped animated series where a woman discovers she might have powers and reconnects with an old friend. Visually stunning, emotionally genuine, and beautiful about relationships when the world feels surreal.

But The art style is divisive and some find it headache-inducing. Season two never arrived and likely never will, which is a real sting.

Schitt's Creek2015

A fish-out-of-water comedy that becomes genuinely interested in its characters and their relationships. The romance elements grow naturally from real affection. Warm, funny, and ultimately very kind.

But The early seasons are broad and the characters start annoying. It takes time to become the show it becomes, and that patience isn't for everyone.

Leaving Las Vegas1995

Where Love Life is optimistic about people finding their way, this asks what happens when people love each other but are fundamentally broken. Same question, opposite answer.

Nicholas Cage and Elisabeth Shue in a love story about two people at the absolute bottom of their lives choosing each other anyway. Brutal, unglamorous, and one of the most honest films about addiction and connection ever made.

But It's extremely dark and doesn't offer hope or redemption. The relationship is toxic and gets worse. It's devastating rather than uplifting.
